Introduction to the Latin American Financial Markets Special Issues of the International Review of Financial Analysis Ricardo Leal*, Lance Nail, Franco Parisi We are pleased to present two special issues of the International Review of Financial Analysis dedicated to research on Latin American financial markets. As political stability and privatization become more common in Central and South America, many of the Latin American economies stand poised to become leaders in the emerging markets. Yet, as witnessed by the 1997–98 global financial crisis, adverse market conditions in the region may have a contagious effect on strong and weak economies alike. This collection of papers addresses the many theoretical and empirical financial issues related to Latin America—from financial contagion to comparisons with more established financial markets and from term structure models to the factors affecting the exchange rates of Latin America currencies. We hope that you find that these articles enhance your understanding of the Latin American financial markets as they contribute to our knowledge base on these increasingly critical emerging markets.
