The independent certification provides assurance that the couplings will perform to industry standards, which helps to reduce costly downtime caused by equipment malfunction or failure. Multifunctional epoxy is designed for chip coating, sealing and encapsulation

ormulated for many electronic applications, Master Bond Inc’s Supreme 3HTND-2CCM is a multifunctional epoxy that is designed for chip coating, glob top and die attach applications, and for bonding, sealing and encapsulation. Since it is a one-part system, it does not require mixing and has an “unlimited” working life at room temperature. According to the company, it passes low outgassing tests set by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which

enables it to be used in vacuum, aerospace and clean room applications. Supreme 3HTND-2CCM has a paste consistency that flows slightly whilst curing. It cures readily at elevated temperatures. The minimum curing schedule is 20–30 minutes at 121°C (250°F) or 5–10 minutes at 149°C (300°F). This is a filled system with low shrinkage upon curing and sound dimensional stability, says Master Bond. It bonds well to a wide variety of substrates used in electronics, including metals, composites, ceramics and many plastics. This highstrength system delivers tensile lap shear, tensile and compressive strength of 1800–2000 psi, 6000–7500 psi and 15 000–17 000 psi, respectively. It has a thermal conductivity of 1.44–1.59 W/(m K) and resists water, acids, bases, fuels and some solvents. Serviceable over a temperature range of -73°C to 204°C (-100°F to 400°F), its inherent toughness enables it to withstand aggressive thermal cycling, says the firm. t the K 2016 International Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber, which was held recently in Düsseldorf, Germany, chemical group Wacker Chemie Ag unveiled Elastosil LR 3020/60 – a liquid silicone rubber (LSR) that cures to form a steam-resistant and hydrolytically stable elastomer. The fast-curing rubber is suitable for highly automated injection-moulding and, therefore, enables the cost-effective large-scale production of moulded seals and other products that need to permanently or regularly withstand hot water or steam. O-rings and other moulded parts made from Elastosil LR 3020/60 are suitable for applications that are regularly exposed to hot water and steam. Typical applications are moulded seals for domestic appliances, medical devices, sanitary engineering, heating systems and power-plant technology. Elastosil LR 3020/60 is a two-component LSR compound that is optimised for injection moulding, and vulcanises rapidly via a platinumcatalysed addition reaction, says the company.

Aesseal wins gold in the RoSPA Awards 2016 Aesseal Plc, a UK-based specialist in the design and manufacture of mechanical seals and support systems, has won a gold award in the 60th year of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ (RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety Awards. Dana Holding Corp changes its name to Dana Inc Dana Holding Corp, a US company that develops engineered driveline, sealing and thermalmanagement technologies, recently changed its name to Dana Inc. NEWS A special feature is its high steam-resistance once the silicone is cured. Standard silicone elastomers can only withstand superheated steam for a short period, which limits their application. The reason for this is that silicone elastomers generally hydrolyse under these conditions, that is, are chemically decomposed by water. This reduces their elastic recovery under pressure. As a result, the seal leaks. According to Wacker, this does not occur with the new Elastosil LR 3020/60 grade. It is largely resistant to hydrolysis and even retains its elasticity in persistent contact with superheated steam. Measurements show that postcured test specimens made from the material – stored for 21 days in autoclaves with steam at 150°C – have a compression set of 62%. This means that they retain sufficient high elastic recovery for sealing purposes, says the firm. Other mechanical properties of the elastomer, such as elasticity and tensile strength, have been substantially improved. Compared with currently available, hotwater-resistant and steam-resistant solid silicone rubbers, Elastosil LR 3020/60 also provides processing advantages, says Wacker. As a fast-curing LSR, the grade enables particularly short cycle-times to be used during injection moulding. In addition, elastomer products can be precision manufactured with virtually no waste. Thus, for the first time ever, plastics processors can use a hydrolytically stable silicone rubber for large-scale production, enabling the cost-effective manufacture of seals, claims the company. Moulded parts made from the material are suitable for applications that are regularly exposed to hot water and steam. Typical examples include moulded gaskets for domestic appliances such as espresso machines or steam irons, medical equipment, sanitary engineering, heating and power-plant technology. The cured products made from the silicone have a further advantage – they are more resistant than standard liquid silicones to many of the conventional disinfectants and cleaning agents used in medical engineering. Postcured vulcanisates of the new silicone grade are food-compatible and meet the requirements of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They also meet the requirements of the hygiene guidelines of the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) for seals and equipment used in applications involving warm and cold water. Bearing Gard technology improves reliability of VFDdriven motors

U

S-based Flowserve Corp, a major provider of flow-control products and services for global infrastructure markets, has introduced new Bearing Gard, bearing isolator upgrade technology. Enhanced with the latest in electrical grounding capabilities, this technology is designed to extend bearing life and reduce operating costs for motors driven by variable frequency drives (VFDs). In recent years, VFDs have grown in popularity because of their ability to deliver greater system efficiency, extend motor service life and optimise operating costs. However, they operate by delivering power to the motor in a series of positive and negative pulses, which often results in an unbalanced voltage that can accumulate in the motor shaft until it can find a path to ground. Without proper grounding between the shaft and the motor housing, the bearings often become the path to ground. The resulting electrical discharge can damage or even destroy the bearings in just a few months of service, says the company, which has developed new Bearing Gard technology to directly address this problem. With integrated electrical grounding protection in place, substantial elimination of shaft voltage is achieved, which helps to significantly extend bearing life. The new Bearing Gard – with electrical grounding technology – dramatically increases electric motor reliability by guarding against the two main causes for premature motor failure: bearing contamination and damage caused by electrical discharge. The Bearing Gard is uniquely capable of resisting contamination at the entry point, using its patented triple combination of static shut-off, O-ring-protected rotor/stator interface and oversized contamination channels. The newly added Aegis grounding ring technology is designed to provide protection against bearing damage caused by electrical discharge and/or fluting. Aegis grounding ring technology provides consistent and reliable current-diversion methods, discharging harmful shaft voltage to the ground instead of through the bearing. Building on the continued success of the Flowserve Bearing Gard product line originally launched in 2014, the Bearing Gard with electrical grounding is the latest addition to a family of bearing isolators and related services and upgrades for rotating equipment including pumps, motors, steam turbines and gearboxes.

Company News Pentair agrees to sell its Valves & Controls business to Emerson

P

entair Plc, which delivers products and services to satisfy its customers’ diverse needs in water and other fluids, thermal management and equipment protection, has reached an agreement to sell its Valves & Controls business to Emerson Electric Co. The cash purchase price is $3.15 billion, subject to customary working capital adjustments. The transaction is anticipated to be completed late in 2016 or early in 2017 and is subject to customary closing conditions and necessary regulatory approvals. Randall J. Hogan, CEO and Chairman, Pentair, stated: ‘We expect this transaction to provide Pentair with the ability to advance its strategy, drive growth and focus resources on three segments, all of which we believe have attractive growth characteristics.’ Pentair acquired the Valves & Controls business in 2012 through an all-stock merger with the Flow Control business of Tyco International Ltd. Valves & Controls’ 2015 revenue totalled $1.8 billion. ‘Through the hard work of dedicated employees, we significantly improved Valves & Controls’ operating profit, creating shareholder value. Additionally, the Flow Control acquisition provided the scale and capital structure to further enable our strategy for growth,’ continued Hogan. Following the closing of this transaction, Pentair’s business will consist of three segments – Water Quality Systems, Flow & Filtration Solutions and Technical Solutions – aligned with global trends to deliver products around water quality and availability, equipment and building protection, industrial and process efficiency, and food and beverage processing. ‘We remain narrowly diversified, which enables us to prioritise investments and affords us opportunities to grow organically and use our strengthened balance sheet as opportunities arise,’ concluded Hogan.
