ABOUT PEOPLE Obituaries Ruth Tate, RD, February 2005, was a past president of both the Knoxville District Dietetic Association and the Tennessee Dietetic Association and was named Tennessee’s Outstanding Dietitian in 1968. She retired as regional dietary consultant for Medicare in East Tennessee. Copher Award Winner Corinne H. Robinson Passes

C

orinne Hogden Robinson, MS, DSc(Hon), nutrition educator and author, passed away January 11, 2005. She was 95 years old. Robinson grew up in the small farming community of Ettrick, WI with three younger brothers. Active in 4-H, she won numerous prizes for her baked and canned goods at county and state fairs, which brought her to the attention of the state 4-H club leader, who convinced her to study dietetics at the University of Wisconsin. An internship at the University of Michigan Hospital followed. During the 1930s, she obtained a research position at the Children’s Hospital Research Foundation in Cincinnati. While there she completed a master’s degree in biochemistry at the Cincinnati College of Medicine. Next she accepted a position in New York City, spending half her time as supervisor of ward dietary services at Presbyterian Hospital and the other half as a nutrition instructor in the Columbia Presbyterian School of Nursing. During this time she began writing Normal and Therapeutic Nutrition. In 1944 she moved to Philadelphia, where, by the end of that decade, she began teaching part-time in local nursing schools and lecturing at the Temple University School of Medicine. Her appointment as Professor of Nutrition and Chairman of the Department of Nutrition and Food at Drexel University came in 1953, and she remained there until retiring in 1967. During that time she developed and taught eight undergraduate and 12 graduate courses. In 1962, Drexel awarded her the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching and in 1976 an honorary Doctor of Science degree. Robinson was a member of the American Dietetic Association since

1931. Over the years she served as Chairman of its Diet Therapy Section, the Internship Board, the Journal Board, the liaison committee with the National League for Nursing, and the program committees for annual meetings held in Philadelphia. She represented the ADA at the first White House Conference on Aging and in 1975 gave the Lenna F. Cooper Memorial Lecture. The next year, ADA honored her with its highest accolade, the Marjorie Hulsizer Copher Award. She was also the president of the Pennsylvania Dietetic Association from 1954-55 and in 1968 this association named her the Outstanding Dietitian of Pennsylvania. Robinson may be best remembered for the many editions of her books, Normal and Therapeutic Nutrition, Basic Nutrition and Diet Therapy, Fundamentals of Normal Nutrition, and Case Studies in Clinical Nutrition, which provided thousands of future dietetics professionals and nurses with their first professional exposure to nutrition. Not to be slighted are 58 research and review articles published in professional journals and books. A superb speaker, Robinson also gave many talks over the years to both lay and professional groups in this country and abroad. Even in retirement she was active in developing feeding programs for older Americans and continued writing; her last book was published in 1997. The Corinne H. Robinson Scholarship in Clinical Nutrition, administered by the American Dietetic Association Foundation, was established in 1976. Contributions to this scholarship in her memory may be sent to the Foundation at 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6995.
