Pulp & Paper [ ] M e e t i n g the d e m a n d for quality on p a p e r By Barbara Horne In the small t o w n of Kehl, in south-west Germany, o n the border to France, stands the Kehl papermill of the August Koehler group, the only E u r o p e a n prod u c e r of thermo-sensitive p a p e r with its o w n patent for the coating process. Built in 1988 o n a greenfield site, the Kehl mill makes c a r b o n l e s s c o p y p a p e r s and special t e c h n i c a l papers. It has an a n n u a l capacity of 100 000 t o n n e s and e m p l o y s a workforce of 200. T h e PMI, w h i c h p r o d u c e s p a p e r s of b e t w e e n 35 a n d 90 g/m 2, is 4.10 m wide r u n n i n g at a rate of 800 m / r a i n and has an on-line coater. The mill naturally needs h u n d r e d s of p u m p s to keep a range of p r o c e s s e s from stock preparation, in a 60 m3 c a p a c i t y pulper, to c o a t i n g r u n n i n g smoothly.
