The last chapter of part I (Chapter 8) returns to the subject of modelling. From our formal basis, we discuss an example of discrete event modeling and introduce the concept of homomorphism as a criterion for valid simplification. Part 2 and 3, which are oriented towards the students majoring in the computer and systems sciences, provide a basis for a second course in modelling and simulation in which the emphasis is on the application of formal systems concepts to problems area. Part 2 consists of two chapters. Chapter 9 develops a hierarchy of system specifications ranging from the lowest behavioral level to the highest strtlctural level. Chapter 10 develops a parallel hierarchy of preservation relations that interrelates specifications. These morphisms (preservation relations) form a hierarchy in that higher level morphisms imply lower level ones, but not conversely. Part 3 opens with an axiomatization of the basic framework, using the systems concepts developed earlier. A number of problems common to many domains are isolated and formulated within the framework. These problems include model simplification, approximation, validation, and prediction, structural inference, program verification, and model integration. Subsequent chapters deal with these problems in some depth.

These systems present usually as well stochastic elements as decision making elements, so that one may expect that the resulting model will be very complex. The Markov models have proven to be, in the practical use, very useful, so that algorithms have been written for their computer use. But the assumption that the dynamic of the systems can be directly observed is very often unrealistic. More often, the system is indirectly observable and the dynamic state is only known as a stochastic function. These assumptions give rise to computation difficulties which makes the application of Markov models often impossible. In this book, the model with indirect observation, according to the studies of Astr6m and Sawaragi, is reduced to models with direct observation and the state domain of the resulting models (domain of
