Minimizing noise and environment pollution Public works and sanitization projects require a range of pumping solutions from the need for sound attenuation in residential areas to the prevention of contamination and environmental impact. This article provides some examples of how SPP fulfilled requirements at low cost and with minimal impact to the surrounding areas.

n the USA, SPP Autoprime pumps have been specified for a number of public works and sanitation projects in the Los Angeles area. A total of six sound attenuated pumps ranging in size from 8 in to 16 in were hired by the City of Los Angeles Dept of Public Works from the Charles King Co, California to perform a sewer bypass during CIPP rehabilitation of a 50 in brick sewer at 12th Street and Hill Street.

Sound attenuation was important since the project was located within 100 ft of college classrooms. The project was completed during school hours without noise impacting on the classroom or surrounding areas. Two SPP XF400-436 pumps, two SPP XF300-418 and two SPP Q Series pumps were operated continuously under flow conditions of 29.4 CFS and 24 ft suction lift. Steve Radaich of Charles King Co commented: “Due to the extremely deteriorated condition of the sewer, loose aggregates including concrete, rocks and brick were present in our wet well which ultimately entered our pumps. However, solids and rags were no match for SPP's spiral vane impeller, which passed all solids while continuously pumping.”

Charles King Co is also currently assembling an SPP XF300-475 to comply with Los Angeles County Sanitation District (LACSD) custom specifications to provide an emergency bypass pumping solution for the Whites Point Pumping Plant. Special requirements include a DOT approved trailer and sound attenuation for residential field use. Located on the California Coast, Whites Point is one of LACSD's most critical and environmentally sensitive pumping plants. A failure of this pumping plant would result in a massive sewage spill directly into the Pacific Ocean. When LACSD first learned of mechanical issues at this plant which put its continuous operation in doubt, they immediately went in search of a single portable diesel pump that was capable of 3,000 GPM at 300 ft THD. They found that the SPP XF300-475 was the only pump that would meet their needs. LACSD then contracted with SPP distributor, Charles King Co, to supply out of their rental fleet, install and test the XF300-475 temporary bypass pumping system. At the other end of the range, SPP Q Series pumps have been chosen to facilitate the construction of a sea wall in

the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia. Due to the varying water levels which infiltrate the area of construction and excavation, vacuum assisted pumping plant is required to reduce the water level to allow the foundations of the sea wall to be constructed. The close proximity of the water course and possible contamination of the marine environment and damage to aquatic life made it imperative that the pump selected for this particular application was of the fully ‘bunded’ type. This arrangement ensures that should any fuels, oils or lubricants escape from the pump or engine, they will be contained within the pump chassis, thus eliminating contamination and environmental impact. Two SPP QI150M Autoprime pumpsets were hired from Coates Hire Perth by a local civil contractor to ensure continuous transfer of saline water to keep ahead of the tidal variations. Working together, the pumps discharge water over a long distance to prevent the return of water to the lagoon. The acoustic enclosure on the Q Series reduces noise levels to 65 d(B)A at 7 m and allows personnel to work alongside the pump without the need for ear protection. Driven by an Isuzu 4 cylinder 4LE2 water cooled diesel engine, the pump unit can operate continuously in high ambient temperatures whilst being fully protected from environmental and impact damage.
