Recently, numerous methods have been developed to detect many diseases at the molecular level. The benefits of directly applying these new molecular techniques to clinical purposes, such as early diagnosis are enormous. However, most of the tech-

niques and experimental approaches are spread over many different areas of molecular biology, easily escaping many investigators’ attention. This symposium volume is the most recent comprehensive compilation of the molecular detection methods, so it can be used as an excellent quick guide for molecular biologists to find an appropriate method for their own needs. This volume includes 32 contributions from 165 authors which were presented at the International Symposium BIOTECH RIA ‘88 held in Florence, Italy, April ll-13,1988. They are arranged into three sections: Molecular Probes in Genetic Diseases, Molecular Probes in Infectious Disease, and Molecular Probes in Solid Tumors.
