In this patent a coupling element suitable for connecting fluid lines as used in sub-sea drilling applications is described. These operations require connectors and mandrels housing couplers for the actuating control lines. They must be able to withstand harsh enviromnents and be readily disconnectcd, in bad weather, for example. In emergency situations it is essential to have a connector capable of'enduring a certain amount of lateral bending without irreparable damage, This invention provides such capabilities and can bc removed form the mandrel into which it has been mounted. As shown in Figure 1, a

Finall> when the coupler is disengaged the valve element (I28) seals with the valve seat (126), as shown in Figure 2 and no fluids are allowed to enter or exit the line. This arrangement is useful for fluid lines that the operator does not want seawater to enter into when the coupler is disengaged from the riscr.

coupling element (10) has a male sealing dement (12) with a first end (14), a second end (16) and a longitudinal axis (20) extending

between. The male element generally has a cy ,nd, ca, shat,, ,vh 'e the rst end has a frusto

conical sealing surfiice (22). This stu'face forms a metal-to-metal seal when mated with a f;emale sealing element. The outer diameter of the first section (42) of the male element is smaller than the inner diameter of the housing (64) so that the first section (42) can move laterally within the housing. The outer surface (53) of" the second section (44) is closely received by the inside suffice (76) of the housing (64) and is not capable of lateral movement inside the housing, The face seal is designed to (60) is designed to contact and seal the second end (48) of the first section while the coupler (10) is made o f t pair of" elastomeric sealing elements (54) received in the pair of radially extending grooves (66) that contact and seal the inner surface of'the bore (74).

Title: Tube plug seal Patent number: US6029981 Date: 29 th February 2000 Inventors: F D Hawle and M D Lutzke Assignee: Form Rite Corp It is standard procedure for automotive u'ansmissions - 'gearboxes' - to be filled with fluid prior to shipment to a cal" factory. In order to stop any of this fluid leaking during transit, tube plug seals are press-fitted into ports in the gearbox wall. Each of these plug seals includes a number of specially weakened tear lines. These allow an easier installation of push-through mating tubes during the car assembly procedure,

Today's plug seals have certain shortcomings including non-optimal tearing and therefore are prone to leaking seals. This new' invention promises to avoid improper mating and provide ready installation while at the same time providing high integrity sealing for the installed gearbox. As shown in Figure 3, a transmission assembly (20) including a transmission housing (22) filled with fluid (24) with an opening (26).The assembly also includes a fluid tube (28)such as cooling fluid tube leading t o a transmission fluid cooler. The

tubenc, udesan , aI:yor,,ard end (30)tobe inserted into the fluid opening ofthc transmission housing A tube p ug seal (32) made of a fluoroelastomer includes an axially outer portion (34) having an outcr diameter bigger than the fluid opening one. The seal also includes a mid-portion with an outer diameter fitting tightly in the fluid opening and an inner diameter less than the outer diameter of the forward end of the tube. A tear line (40) extends circumferentially approximately 280 degrees about an ,axial centre (42) of the tubc plug seal. This tear line cxtends along an arc with a radial distance equal to the tube radius. The tear line defines a secured web portion (44) that remains continuous with the inner portion (38) of the seal by way of a hinged portion (46). \Vhen the tube is inserted into the transmission housing the forward end contacts the tear line causing the plug seal to tear allowing the transmission fluid into the housing. The outer portion, mid-portion and inner portion form a seal. This configuration places the greatest stress on the tear line so the tearing is more controlled and consistent ovcra range of temperatures.
