Magnets: permanent magnet, positioned against pre-set factory stops, manually shunted (standard) or pneumatically shunted (optmonal). Both magnets are mounted and supported directly on the analyser tube to permit easy alignment and removal. Resolution: unit resolution is at mass 75. Sensitivity: 1 x 10-13 tort or better, partial pressure for nitrogen (N=) when the electron-multiplier collector is used; I × 10-t° torr or better, partial pressure for nitrogen when an electrometer ion collector is used. Pressure range: from total pressures of 10-~ torr for electrometer ion collector and 10 -s torr for the electron-multiplier collector to partial pressures of 1 x 10 -~3 or better. Scanning mode: manual mass scan and single peak monitoring, automatic scan, and very fast scanning with oscilloscope Ol a slow external sweep generator. Switching from one scanning mode to another is easily effected by means of a sw~tch on the front panel. Scanning speed: 20, 10, 5 and 2½ minutes for one mass range when a recorder is used. With an oscilloscope, scanning speeds can be varied down to 0.1 seconds/scan for one entire mass range. Considerably faster scanning IS possible over limited segments of a range. The recorder-oscilloscope mode of display permits very slow scans (several hours) so that spectrum structure can be clarified. Read-out mode: a recorder and/or an oscilloscope (not provided) can be used. A switch on the front panel permits easy switching from one read-out mode to the other. Bakeability: analyser tube without electron multiplier, to 400°C; with electron multiplier to 300 °C. Electron multiplier: the electron multiplier is an integral part of the collector assembly of the analyser tube. Its power supply and controls are contained in the control console. Control console: all controls, power supplies, amplifier, recorder and meters are contained m a Formica topped desk-type cabinet. Accelerating voltage, mass and output are indicated on front panel meters providing simplified mass identification. A recorder tracking potentiometer on the front panel is used to synchronize the recorder and output meter. All controls are in a convenient location permltting operation from a seated position. A pull-out drawer contains controls and meters for adjustment of filament emission, filament current, ion accelerating and focusing potentials as well as electron-multiplier voltage. The console is mounted on four swivel rubber casters. Utilities: 105 to 125 volts, 60 cps power; air pressure for pneumatic shunt, 75 lb/in=; 50 cps system is available as an option; 350 watts. Ferrant= vacuum-tight ceram=c-to-metal seals perature and pressure conditions. Disc seals: these are said to operate satisfactorily in the majority of environments and be particularly useful where size and cost are limiting considerations. Internal seals: although these seals have inherently low working temperature and pressure limits, they are the most compact in form and are thus particularly useful in confined spaces. Ferranti have also produced several other ceramic-to-metal devices such as commutators, slip-ring assemblies, insulated pulleys, valve seats and printed circuitry on ceramic-base material. Crystal-growing equipment The Materials Research Corporation has expanded its line of electron-beam zone refiners, and the line now includes six models ranging from complete ultra-high-vacuum systems to small laboratory-type apparatus. These refiners may also be used for growing crystals. The literature offered includes descnptwe information and specifications on all six of the electron-beam zone-refining models, including three new types, and technical articles describing the use and advantages of the equipment.

Vacuum-fight ceramic-to-metal seals Ceramic-to-metal seals are now used increasingly for situations
where leak-tight insulated connection into high-pressure or highvacuum systems is required, particularly in connection with high temperature. Ferranti Limited have been closely associated with projects involving this use and they have developed a comprehensive range of seals that are said to meet the majority of modern needs. Ceramic-to-metal seals Incorporate metallized ceramics of high alumina content brazed directly to nickel alloys or to copper by using special high-temperature brazing alloys. These ceramic-tometal seals combine good electrical insulation with mechanical strength and vacuum tightness, features which are ensured by stringent production control and testing. Ferranti ceramic-to-metal seals are made in the following three forms: Compression seals: these are built to stand up to the toughest tem-
Vacuum Research valves and gaskets Vacuum Research Company have recently introduced a new line o f their vacuum slide valves, designated the LP (large port) series. In addition to the tried and proved featmes of the company's valves, the company claim the following additional features for the new series: Centerline body flange: (instead of end plate) means easier, faster servicing. "Lift-out" assembly: entire operating mechanism lifts out in one motion. Takes less than two minutes Flanged portton stays bolted m the line Variable porting : standards ports match today's high-speed diffusion pumps yet body design pmmits larger openings to specification Variable-location roughing ports: three optional outlets; gate side, carriage side or bottom (between flanges). No piping problems "Roller-coaster" action: open carriage rides on rollers. No shde fraction, no galling. Side thrust on nylon buttons. Four point suspension. Integral stem pumping: built-in access through stem housing provides constant pumping to vacuum side of stem seal. Precludes trapped gases and thus minimizes pressure bursts on actuation. Mono-cast body sections: cast in permanent moulds with outgassed melt. The smaller unit sections mean more uniform, higher density (non-porous), smoother castings and the "low slung" halves mean easier access for cleaning. Convertible actuation: manual operators can be replaced by pneumatic operators or vice versa without dismantling the valve. Completely interchangeable without special adaptlon. Multiposition, hand throttle operators easily attached by hub machining. 87
