AB UNO DISCE OMNES The science of mycology had its beginnings in Italy in 1729 with the publication of 'De rerum plantarum genera ' by P A Micheli (1670-1733). In the same century important contributions were provided by G A Battarra (1714-1789), and G A Scopoli (1723-1788), in the last century by C Vittadini (1800-1865), 0 Comes (1848-1917), G Inzenga (1815-1887), G De Notaris (1805-1877), G Briosi (1846-1919), and in the present century by F Cavara (1857-1929), G Bresadola (1847-1929), P A Saccardo (1845-1920), 0 Mattirolo (1856-1947), 0 Penzig (1836-1929). The Unione Micologica Italiana was founded in 1969 by a group of professors of the University of Bologna and some enthusiasts. The President is Prof Gabriele Goidanich and the

General Secretary Prof Gilberto Govi. It is a national Mycological Society with 250 members including mycologists, plant pathologists and amateurs. The UMI also comprises 30 mycological groups throughout the country. In 1972 , the Society began the publication of the journal Micologia Italiana, which is edited by G Govi. It is published three times a year and distributed throughout the world in exchange with other Society and University libraries or it can be obtained by subscription. The journal accepts contributions on physiology, taxonomy, biochemistry, toxicology, ecology and cultivation of fungi. The editorial board includes a committee of referees . The main activities are : conferences , forays , mycology courses for technicians and amateurs , studies on micro and macromycetes , and mycorrhizal synthesis . The UMI also organizes meetings on specialized subjects and every other year a national meeting with papers or a workshop . In 1981, in collaboration with the University of Bologna , the UMI hosted the 8th congress of European mycologists.
