Clariant Masterbatches Division has introduced a new colorant process for Carilon Polymers. Users of Carilon Polymers, Shell Chemicals' range of aliphatic polyketones, can now get a palette of standard colours for developing custom colour matches for applications throughout the world. Carilon Polymers are used in applications where a high degree of chemical resistance and durability are required. These include fuel resistance in automotive applications, and temperature resistance and flame retardancy in electrical applications. They can also impart lubricity, which can ensure long life in gears and moving parts. The polymer has a fast set-up time and has reduced cycle times. "Carilon Polymers have many automotive, electrical and industrial applications, and the availability of new Clariant masterbatches should expand the use of Carilon Polymers
into consumer products," says Eric Noyrez, global marketing director for Carilon Polymers. Clariant says that it is the first colorant manufacturer to offer colorant processing that does not alter the mechanical characteristics and flow properties of Carilon Polymers. The company adds that the development was the result of co-operative work between Carilon Polymers scientists and
Clariant. Clariant has developed two successful methods for achieving the coloration of Carilon Polymers - one in its laboratories in the USA and the other one in Europe. The solution developed in the USA uses changes in carrier selection and additive formulation. Clariant says that it has developed new colorant formulations that do not affect
the unique quick set-up and moulding characteristics of Carilon Polymers or their performance. The solution has resulted in a palette of 12 standard colours and used carrier substitutions and modifications to the additive masterbatch packages. All the formulations have received UL recognition. The European system is based on refinements in processing technology and related parameters. A palette of 20 colours is available as benchmark points to arrive quickly at custom colour matches. A number of new applications have been worked on that are now commercial, says Clariant.
