The author's recommendation that pregnant women have Yz teaspoon iodized salt daily, needs reconsideration in light of recent studies showing that Americans consume much more than enough iodine. In addition, the typical prenatal prescription of 30-60 mg iron, defended in the book, perhaps needs more critical review by nutritionists. These minor criticisms should not detract from the overall tremendous value of the book. Although written for a lay audience, the book's completeness and balance make it a valuable resource for health professionals who counsel parents and parents-to-be. It will be especially useful for those professionals who know nutrition concepts, but lack information on the practical nittygritty that patients often need. Each chapter closes with an extensive question and answer section that highlights the important principles of the chapter and touches on common misunderstandings. Chapters on fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and weight control are well done and provide the reader with the basic information and principles necessary for a good foundation in nutrition. This book is easy reading and rewarding, but it is for beginners. Documentation and references are generally missing, so the book is not suitable as a text. William J. Let there be no mistake about it: Author Addleman is out to change our diet, and with all the conviction and enthusiasm of a true believer, he has written a book to do just that. What he advocates, of course, is a diet of whole natural foods, high in complex carbohydrates and low in fat, protein, and food additives. But what he so enthusiastically states is seldom overstated. This is a book of sound information and principles, written primarily for the reader looking for a good primer on nutrition. After an introductory chapter on the role of nutrition in health and performance, Addleman takes up, in sequence, the topics
