The second part of Vol. I dealing with spontaneous and induced tumors of rats covers neoplastic growth of liver: respiratory tract; the urogenital organs of male and female animals; the pituitary, thyroid and adrenal gland; the central and peripheral nervous system, and the heart. Every chapter consists of plates of black and white reproductions of histological sections of characteristic parts of the tumors, frequently at two magnification levels, preceded by expertly written introductory texts, in which the normal tissue structures, gross and microscopic or occasionally electron-microscopic. pathology are described. The text also contains lists of the most important carcinogens causing specific neoplasms, including radiation and hormonal or anti-hormonal effects. Specific staining procedures and immunological assay methods are discussed. The histological pictures are explained by the “Key to Illustrations” in which the carcinogenic substances used are mentioned in the majority of the chapters. The reproduction of the pathological changes are, as a rule, clear and with good contrast of the various tissue components; they will certainly serve as helpful guides for the histopathological diagnostic of the great number of various tumors observed in the necropsies of rats in studies on the toxicology. nutrition, and experimental therapy in rats. That some of the latest developments in the area of carcinogenesis are not mentioned is understandable considering the likely long production time of the volume.
