n t h e fall of 1996 I w a s a s k e d to t e a c h a g r a d u a t e n u r s i n g c o u r s e in b e h a v i o r a l c o n c e p t s of s e l e c t e d p a t h o p h y s i o l o g i c d i s e a s e s . I w a s e c s t a t i c . Finally, after w o r k i n g m a n y y e a r s to o b t a i n a m a s t e r ' s d e g r e e in n u r s i n g , I w o u l d b e a b l e to u s e all t h a t I h a d learned. To m y g r e a t s u r p r i s e t h e m o s t difficult p a r t of t e a c h i n g w a s n o t t h e c o n t e n t , b u t t h e c h a l l e n g e of helping students broaden their thinking. Each assignment and each class discussion was designed to h e l p t h e s t u d e n t s shift from their c u r r e n t p a r a d i g m of n u r s i n g to a b r o a d e r focus of n u r s i n g a s a profession a n d a s a c h a n g e a g e n t in society. T h e a s s i g n m e n t s also w e r e d e s i g n e d to e n c o u r a g e i n d e p e n d e n t a n d i n t e r d e p e n d e n t t h i n k i n g a n d a c t i o n s b y allowing t h e s t u d e n t s to s e e k o u t a n d s h a r e i n f o r m a t i o n a n d current research. T h r o u g h o u t t h e first s e m e s t e r , I b e g a n to jot d o w n w h a t I called "pearls of w i s d o m , " little t h o u g h t s w i t h large i m p l i c a t i o n s for g r a d u a t e school. H e r e is t h e c o m p l e t i o n of t h e t h o u g h t s from t h e first s e m e s ter. I h o p e t h e s e f e w p e a r l s c a n help o t h e r s t u d e n t s in their q u e s t for k n o w l e d g e .
