Pistons from Brazil

FEDERAL-Mogul has begun producing pistons from a state-of-the-art manufacturing line at its new Powertrain Energy business segment’s 110,000 square foot plant in Araras, Brazil. The facility has 338 employees and makes pistons, camshafts, valve seats, PM valve seat inserts, and PM valve guides for several leading vehicle manufacturers. The plant was built to accommodate a high-tech piston line as well as for relocating the operation of a former facility in Araras that made camshafts, and valve seats and guides. The company expects a second piston line to be operating by the end of 2008.

Scrap on the up and up THE roller coaster price of steel scrap, the major raw material for iron powder manufacture which soared more than 35 per cent last year, rose 70% to more than $700 a ton between January and the end of May. • Metal scrap recycling is big business in China, according to US-based BCC Research. Metals such as aluminium,

copper, iron and steel have the largest share of the market, accounting for 76.7 million tonnes of recycled materials in China in 2007. This should increase, says BCC, to 83.5 million tonnes in 2008 and 123.2 million metric tons in 2013, for a compound average growth rate of 8.1%.

Saving water down under AN Australian office furniture manufacturer plans to save 10 megalitres of water a year by installing a recycling unit on its metal powder coating line. The metal powder line Melbourne-based Schiavello at has already contributed to reduced energy costs. Environmental manager Malcolm Pitcher said: “Energy usage is down 23 per cent over five years, mainly due to the more efficient use of gas and the introduction of more efficient technology.”

PM up in Italy ITALY’S PM parts industry grew 12 per cent in 2007, with production reaching 32 500 tonnes, according to the Italian PM association ASSINTER. Production of ironbase parts increased to 30 500 tonnes, while production of copper-base parts declined slightly to 1000 tonnes. Sales of PM parts also increased about 12 per cent to 250.3 million (about $393 million), including exports with a value of 150.9 million (about $237 million).
