OM Group acquires SCM Metal Products METAL powder producer SCM Metal Products Inc has been bought by the OM Group Inc of Cleveland, USA, for US$122 million. The OM Group is a leading producer of metalbased specialty chemicals, a market that SCM Metal Products serves in addition to its metal powder business. The OM Group says the acquisition is part of the company’s strategy to buy addi-
tional businesses that can use its core strengths in technology and metals. SCM Metal Products lnc, previously a division of US Industries, produces specialty powders from copper, iron and stainless steel. The company serves over 35 niche markets including PM sectors, such as the automotive industry, electronics, as well as other areas such as the catalysts markets.
OM Group’s principal product lines include metal carboxy lates, metal salts and metal powders. The company serves a diverse range of industries including catalysts, ceramics, coatings, electronics, magnetic tapes, petroleum refining, plating, plastics and other specialty chemicals. Ametek reports record sales and earnings US-BASED metal powder manufacturer Ametek Inc has posted record results for full year sales, operating income and income and earnings per share from continuing operations in 1996. The company, which also has extensive electrical and electromechanical businesses, says that it has benefited from improved market conditions and outstanding performances by its specialty metals, water filter and aerospace operations. Earnings per share from continuing operations for the
year were US$1.57, up 20% from the result a year earlier. Operating income in 1996 rose 6% to $95.1 million, while sales rose 4% compared with a year earlier to reach $868.7. The company says the sales of its Industrial Materials Group (IMG) increased at a double-digit rate, while operating income rose dramatically led by strong gains in Specialty Metal Products. Among the new product offerings contributing to the record result were highly corrosion-resistant metal powders, metal matrix
composites for electronics, and new high performance metallurgical materials for the electronics, automotive and consumer products markets. The company also reports that it intends to increase production at its Specialty Metals plant in Eighty Four, Pennsylvania. The company will double its capacity to serve the growing market for stainless steel powder. Ametek Specialty Metal Product-s Division; tel: + l412-225-8400; fw: + l-412. 225-6622.
Allegheny Teledyne reports increased earnings ALLEGHENY Teledyne’s earnings for the fourth quarter of 1996 totalled US$68.2 million an increase of 31% compared with a year earlier. Sales from continuing operations in the quarter rose slightly to $920.3 million from $914.7. Both results are before unusual items. The company says that its operating profit was higher in all segments compared with
the same quarter in 1995. In its specialty metals segment, operating profit from high value products, especially titanium and nickel-based superalloys, more than offset price weakness in its flat-rolled stainless steel. Sales and operating profits in its industrial segment also improved. Sales for this segment were US$483 million, a decline of 7% in the fourth quarter of 1996 com-
pared with the same period of 1995. Operating profit, however, gained 23% and rose to $7 1 million. Sales in the group’s industrial segment, which includes cutting tools, amounted to $104 million in the fourth quarter, a gain of 15% on the same period of 1995. launches equipment for powder sampling PHILIPS Analytical X-Ray has introduced two items of equipment for preparing powder samples for characterization _ a planetary ball mill and a powder press. The ‘MiniMill’ produces powder that is suitable for pressing into pellets for investigation by x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) or x-ray diffractometry (XRD). It uses a planetary system to drive two powder containers which accept sample quantities of up to 20 ml, and a number of grinding balls. Producing powders with a fineness of less than 20 urn, the company says the mill has a high mixing and homogenizing efficiency. Powder containers and grinding balls are available in stainless steel, zirconia and silicon nitride, to allow the selection of a milling set for minimum contamination. Philips says that accurate and reproducible grinding are ensured by a rotating speed control and a timer, and an automatic safety lock prevents the protective cover from being opened inadvertently during operation. The hand operated ‘MiniPress’, meanwhile, has a maximum capacity of 25 tonnes and is intended for economical production of XRF or XRD samples with good surface flatness, says Philips. It comprises a lever operated hydraulic pump, which accepts interchangeable pelleting dies. The stainless steel dies use a mirror polished plunger to produce pressed powder samples with the required surface flatness. A pressure gauge, calibrated in 0.5 tonne increments, allows accurately controlled compression to achieve consistent packing densities.
