Process for producing carbon fibre and graphite fibre Komine, K., Kato, H., Naito, T., Hino, T. and Kuroda, H. (Toa Nenryo Kogyo, KK, Japan) US Pat 4 895 712 (23 January 1990) Carbonaceous pitch is spun; the resulting fibre is infusibilized by thermosetting at less than 350°C in a furnace with at least 30% oxygen content and finally the fibre is carbonized or graphitized. During spinning the fibre is doubled in bundles and a non-aqueous heat-resistant doubling treatment oil is added either during or after the doubling step. The oil is selected from alkyiphenyipolysiloxane containing 5--80% mole of phenyl group and dimethylpolysiloxane containing antioxidant. Method for forming titanium alumiuideductile titanium aluminium alloy matrix alloy

composites Rosenthal, D.G. and Goebel, J.A. (Avco Lycoming, Stratford, CT, USA) US Pat 4 896 815 (30January 1990) At least one layer of a high temperature resistant titanium aluminide and at least one layer of ductile titanium--aluminium alloy are superposed and metallurgically bonded under high isostatic pressure at temperatures between 925 and 980°C. The resulting composite has superior mechanical properties to both the titanium aluminide at room temperature and 650°C and the titanium-aluminium alloy at 540~C.

Aylor, H.H. and Hirtz, B.A. (Insituform Mid America, Inc, Chesterfield, MO, USA) US Pat 4 897135 (30 January 1990) A method is described of reconstructing a large diameter fixed passageway by applying a fibreglass sandwich to at least one 360° section. The sandwich has a balsawood core between fibreglass laminates. Method for conditioning composite structures Covey, J.H. (The Boeing Company, Seattle, WA, LISA) US Pat 4 89"7 143 (30 January 1990) A method of conditioning a structure which contains at least one joint between sheets made from composite materials consists of raising the sparking current threshold which causes sparking across such joints. The method involves passing a conditioning current at a level less than the sparking current threshold through the joint for a predetermined time. Preparation of fibres from a liquid precursor Emblem, H.G., Jones, K. and Boulton, J.M. (Ciinotherm Limited, West Yorkshire, UK) US Pat 4 897 232 (30 January 1990) A homogeneous clear solution is formed by dissolving a mixture of water and a C r C 4 alcohol in an aluminium halohydrate organic complex obtained from an aluminium halohydrate and a polyol containing 2-6 carbon atoms and at least two hydroxy groups. A magnesium salt and an organic silicate containing at least one C~-C6 organic group is incorporated into the solution. The magne-

sium, aluminium and silicon are present in an oxide stoichiometry for cordierite. The solvent is evaporated to cause polymerization and a clear homogeneous filament is drawn from the concentrated solution which is fired to form a ceramic cordierite fibre. Method for producing carbon fibre reinforced

thermoplastic resin product Kosuda, H., Nagata, Y. and Endoh, Y. (Toho Rayon Co, Ltd, Tokyo, Japan) US Pat 4 897 286 (30 January 1990) Carbon fibres are impregnated by immersion in a suspension of a powder of a thermoplastic resin in a liquid medium containing at least 20 weight % organic liquid and 0-80 weight % water. The deposited thermoplastic resin is heated so that it melts and forms a unitary assembly with the carbon fibres, Process for preparing ceramics composite sintered bodies Horiguchi, Y., Yamamoto, N. and Goto, T. (Lion Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) US Pat 4 897370 (30January 1990) A process for preparing a glass or glassceramic composite sintered body consists of reacting at least one silicic acid ester, at least one phosphorus compound and at least one water-soluble calcium salt with water in amount necessary to hydrolyse these components in the presence of either ceramic fine particles with a composition or crystal structure different from that of the sintered body formed from the above or ceramic short fibres or whiskers. A gel is formed which is dried, moulded and then sintered.
