Non-contacting seals reduce operating costs John Crane has developed a new range of non-contacting mechanical seals which it hopes can improve seal performance on pump applications by reducing operational costs, enhancing reliability, increasing safety and also extending seal life. The seals are designed to be particularly environmentallyfriendly, with figures released by the Fluid Sealing Association show that they reduce the cost of electricity used and the associated greenhouse gas emissions by 92% when compared to a conventional wet seal rotating at normal pump speeds and pressures. The Type 2800X dual seals have been designed for non-turbo, large–bore rotating equipment
applications and can be used in a wide variety of performancecritical applications, including the processing of extremely pure materials where no contamination is permissible, the use of reactive or temperature-sensitive media where local process ‘hot spots’ can cause unwanted chemical reactions, and cold applications such as ammonia processing. The seals feature spiral grooves machined into the mating ring faces of the seal heads. As the pump shaft rotates, a pressurised inert gas is injected between the faces and compressed as it flows into these grooves. The gas expands again as it leaves the spiral grooves and generates a force which separates the faces to create non-contacting operation.

The new pump’s maximum delivery head is 100 m and maximum capacity is 1450 m3/h. Like all Allheat pumps, Allheat1000 does not require external cooling.

The pump moves thermal oils at temperatures up to 350°C and is suitable for moving larger quantities of thermal oil across long distances. For example, at 50 Hz and a speed of 2900 1/min, the pump can move 1000 m3/h of liquid to a height of 80 m.
Pulse free pumping from Northern Pump Northern Pump, a division of McNally Industries, has added a new pulse-free design to its line of gear pumps, the NPC Series. The pumps have a pulsefree flow for even coating and higher quality films, and predictable fluid delivery without the fluid slippage common in the average pump, even at low viscosities, the company has announced.
overhaul capability in which, as any part wears, it is possible to replace that part and not the entire pump. It also has modularity whereby a 5 cc/rev pump can be easily converted to a 15 cc/rev pump and connection style and seal options are also available. The pump has chemical compatibility and a stainless steel and fluorochemical construction. The NPC Series is currently available in two body sizes with capacities of 3 cc/revolution and 15 cc/ revolution.

Gas flow computer receives ATEX certification Remote monitoring specialist Control Microsystems has received European ATEX certification for its SCADASense line of gas flow computers and sensor-based products.
Allweiler AG has introduced Allheat 1000, a speciallydesigned centrifugal pump for moving thermal oils, at WTT Expo in Germany last October, a trade fair for heat exchangers and heat-transfer technology. The new pump will be part of the company’s Allheat product family which has been designed for a variety of heat transfer liquids such as oils, water, glycol, and fused salt baths.

atmospheres. Manufacturers who adhere to its provisions are able to sell their equipment anywhere in Europe without any further certification requirements. Control Microsystems received ATEX certification for all its SCADASense products that use sensors with differential pressure measurement capabilities.
Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics has developed the Furon Precision Dispense Pump (PDP), a dosing pump designed to deliver accurate and repeatable doses of aggressive or ultra-pure media. Its wetted surfaces are made of highpurity fluoropolymers and can be used in the dispensing of ultra-pure chemicals used in the semiconductor, pharmaceutical, and medical industries. The pump features the company’s PTFE rolling diaphragm technology for pulsation-free dispensing. It also incorporates a fullyprogrammable suckback
capability which can provide complete control over residual drops of liquid.
