The site investigations for this project are briefly reported - borehole data, fleld sheer vane test results stud grourzlwater level data. The design considerations resul tir~ from the site investigation ere discussed and the construction method is presented. The measures taken to combat and monitor settlement s and some suggested causes for the settlement are mentioned.

BOP~_~KI,M Fundamental criteria of forecasting the stability of principal warkings. Symposit~n. PROC.KATOWICE SYMP.ON PROTECTION AGAINST ROCK FALL, ISRM.OCT. 1973. Some analytical and empirical methods of forecasting the stability of rocks in principal workings are discussed: The practical importance of analogy methods is stressed and the criteria of choosing the parameters for ol~ti,,~m co-operat~on of supl~rts with the group are examined:

958 SHEPHERD, R Nk~L~,WH Strata behaviour. 14F, ~R. COLLIERY GUARD.MARCH AND MAY,1973, 9P. Measurements of stress changes in the forward abutment zone of the advancing longwall face urger a sardstone roof prone to rock bumps showed that rock bumps resulted from high stress concentrations produced by the residual flank abutments of the abandoned face and the normal forward abutment. The stress charge, roof to floor convergence and other parameters were studied during and after actual rock bumps. The effects of installing powered supports to replace single props were also investigated;

B~GRAD, 1970, V~, 1974, I~02-~03 • At the time of preparation of %~%e paper the construction of the cavities was underway: These conclusions are intended to show the results of the design aspects in the c~npleted excavation. The rocks of the area are described and the proposed situation and capacity of +he powerhouse are outlined. The geological investlzations revealed a major fault which resulted in the selection of a n e w site. On the basis of bore_hole photographic investigations the axis of t~e powerhouse, transecting the major Joint system, was Judged satisfactory. This has since proved correct. The major decisions taken independently of the finite element technique are stressed: The use of stress analysis is emphaslsed as being imlx~tant in optimizir~ and proportioning major elements of the underground works such as the length of rock bolts, thickness of penstock steel liners etc. The use of a finite elemen~ model of deformations around the cavi+.ies at various stages of construction is described.

G(YI~IG, P Strata pressure problems of a colliery.In German. GLUCKAUF, V109, N23,1973, Pl128-1131. A report is ~esented on strata pressure problems at Weatfalen Colliery, where workings are at depths between 900 and ll00m and there are rapidly moving faces. The major problems are the assessment of the rock outburst hazard, roof control in the face and roadway stability. An example of the precalculation of pressures to be encountered during the working of a district is descrlbed. This enables zones of increased tension to be dealt with.
