Registered disabled people The latest figures for the employment of disabled people in the public sector show a further decline and give continued cause for concern. This was stated by Mr John Grant, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Employment in reply on 15 December last to a written Parliamentary Question from George Rodgers, MP. But Mr Grant pointed out that many disabled working people do not register or reveal their disablement when applying for jobs. This is making it difficult for employers in the public sector to be seen to be fulfilling the three per cent quota of registered disabled people.

Despite a year in which accident rates generally fell in British coal mines, 1976 saw little improvement in the total number of underground transport casualties. Fifteen men were killed and 187 seriously injured in underground transport accidents compared with 22 and 196 respectively in 1975. Although that was a reduction, transport operations still account for 41% of all underground accidents and 34% of all accidents at coal mines, says the annual report of HM Chief Inspector of Mines and Quarriesj'lealth and Safety: Mines and Quarries 1976, (HMSO, price £2 plus postage).

The Inspectorate has again produced a 'cause analysis' chart for transport accidents, showing an almost identical situation to that which existed in 1975, in that 'unsuitable systems', 'bad operator practice' and 'lack of ordinary caution' together account for more than half the accidents.
