APPLICATI#l&$ Phenolic GRP grating is a first for offshore industry GRATINGS and ladders in fire-resistant phenolic glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) have been supplied for the first time to the European offshore industry on Amoco’s Davy and Bessemer platforms by Composites Engineering of Middlesbrough, UK. The firm says it applied the latest pultrusion and production techniques to create the products that were selected by the operator as the most costeffective way of meeting stringent offshore safety specifications. AU the benefits of GRP are offered such as durability, ease of installation, minimal main-
tenance, non-sparking, non-corrosive and a highstrength-to-weight ratio. The phenolic grating also meets the fire retardance standard BS 476 Part 6 and 7, Class 0 and has low smoke and toxicity properties. The firm, which is a division of Lionweld Kennedy, has now added phenolic GRP grating and ladders to its range of access engineering products for industries where fire .retardance properties are essential. SMC helps to show off Shell petrol SHEET moulding compound (SMC) has been selected by Shell to help it maintain its retail visual identity across Europe. ‘Prime sign’ panels moulded in SMC are being supplied to 13 500 petrol stations over a five-yearperiod by Hepworth Industrial Plastics. SMC was selected thanks to its corrosion resistance, fire retardancy, versatility in moulding and long term performance. It also allows Shell designs
Cooling towers are big business for GRP in India WITH the current upswing in the Indian economy, the cooling tower business is heating up with more and more power, fertilizer and petrochemical plants being commissioned. Various glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) components are used in cooling tower manufacture. Paharpur Cooling Towers Ltd is one of the major manufacturers in India. It makes most cooling tower components from GRP, some of them being basins, casings, fan stacks, structural members, fan blades, and fill hanging grids. Different moulding techniques are adopted for the various components. For example, hand lay-up is used for the casings, basins and fan stacks, while fan blades are made from hot metal matched moulding. Reinforced Plastics November 1995
Paharpur produces 2000 cooling towers annually with fan sizes as large as 7.3 m. It is currently in the process of installing a series of pultrusion units which will be used to fabricate a range of GRP channels, beams and angles. The company has a USs850million annual turnover from its four manufacturing units. It exports cooling towers to 30 countries around the world. To date, it has exported $40 million worth of cooling towers, and is one of India’s three highest consumers of glass fibre. The company has collaborated with US firm Marley Cooling Tower Co for over 30 years. M/s Paharpur Cooling Towers Ltd; fax: + 91-334792188.
SMC is helping Shell maintain consistency in its visual identity across Europe.
to be reflected accurately. The order translates into a supply of 500-600 tonnes of SMC each year. The prime signs are modular in design and range in height from 5 to 7 m. Each contains up to six different mouldings which carry messages relating to customer offers, fuel prices and additional facilities at the location. All mouldings are 1900 mm wide but depths vary according to function. On completion, the units are shipped from Hepworth’s UK manufacturing facility to Spain where messages are applied and the signs assembled. Consistency of image is critical to maintaining its corporate identity, says Shell. The scale of its European activity is such that it decided to use a centralized components supply system for signs and other items for all its European outlets, rather than opting to use different suppliers for different countries. This approach also offers significant economies in view of the large number of units involved. Hepworth Industrial Plastics is one of a number of companies across Europe, each of which has a term contract to supply specific components related to the retail visual identity. Twenty one Shell operating companies across Europe are already using the SMC signs from Hepworth. Hepworth Building Products; tel: + 44- 1226 763561.
