Externally activated seal system for wellhead Applicant/Inventor: B.H. Van Bilderbeek (USA) A method and apparatus for a seal assembly for a unitized wellhead system for land or platform applications is described in this patent. The invention is particularly applicable to seal between concentric strings in the wellhead where the seal is activated via an external, non-invasive seal energizing system and uses metal-to-metal seals with finely-controlled contact stresses for lock-down casing and tubing hangers. The compression system has a compression flange (14) and a compression wedge (15). The compression flanges are rings with tapered inner surfaces that mate

with the tapered outer surfaces of the compression wedges. Axial movement of the compression flanges over the compression wedges compresses the compression wedges inwards, in turn compressing a portion of the wellhead housing (1) inwards, within the elastic range. The compression system may be configured with a split spacer ring (16) between the compression wedge and the wellhead housing. The split spacer rings have minimal hoop stiffness, and simply pass the radial contact loads from the compression wedge into the wellhead housing. Disposable transducer seal Applicant: Liposonix Inc, USA This invention pertains to a sealing device for retaining a coupling fluid such as degassed water within an ultrasound transducer housing. Ultrasound transducers require a coupling medium to connect the transducer to a patient in order to minimize the reflection and refraction of ultrasound waves when those waves cross a border between two materials of similar acoustic properties. One of the biggest issues in coupling transducers to a patient either for a diagnostic ultrasound device, or a therapeutic ultrasound device, is the presence of air. It is an objective of the present invention to provide for a seal that is both inexpensive to manufacture, and that can be quickly and easily installed into a transducer housing. The seal is also disposable so reuse and re-sterilization concerns can be avoided. The retainer (592) of the disposable

transducer seal (590) has an annular configuration. The membrane (594) is drawn tightly around the retainer. The membrane is drawn tightly about the retainer and held in place. Patent number: WO 2005/065422 Inventors: C.S. Desilets et al. Publication date: 21 July 2005

Seal with non-contact adjacent deflector rings Applicant: FAG Kugelfischer AG, Germany This patent relates to a bearing shaft seal with a non-contact deflector ring arrangement. The seal is mounted on a stationary deflector ring (3). A rotating hub (10) has a number of deflector rings on the outside diameter (11, 12) which are designed so that

they do not come into contact with the outer deflector ring. Between the deflector ring lips are hollow cavities (19, 23). Patent number: WO 2005/059412 Inventors: E. Hartmann and W. Walter Publication date: 30 June 2005

Layer system for a rotor/stator seal of gas turbines Applicant: MTU Aero Engines GmbH, Germany. The invention relates to a layer system for an abradable rotor/stator seal of a turbine, especially gas turbines. The abradable seal layers are designed to be fitted to both the stator housing and the rotor of the turbine which are preferably manufactured from a titanium base alloy or a titanium-aluminum alloy. The layer system has an abradable coating comprising at least two layers, a first, inner layer of the coating being harder than a second, outer layer. The layers of

the abradable coating are made from a ceramic material. According to the invention, the layers (16, 17, 18) of the coating (13) are graded in such a manner that the porosity varies across the thickness of the layers. The first, inner layer (16) has a lower porosity or may be denser than the second, outer layer (17). The inner layer also provides a titanium fireproof coating.
