IN BRIEF Homespring filters are tested and certified Zenon Environmental’s Homespring UF200 series of ultrafiltration systems is now certified to meet the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (US EPA) Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers, following independent testing. It is the first series of whole home water filtration systems to be certified as a Microbiological Water Purifier, says Zenon. The first stage of the purifier uses granulated activated carbon to pre-filter the water, while the second stage uses Zenon’s ZeeWeed hollow-fiber membranes. Airlines monitor water quality on board aircraft The US Environmental Protection Agency reports that it has reached settlements with 11 major airlines and 13 smaller airlines in the US to ensure the safety of the drinking water used by their passengers and crew. The settling airlines have agreed to routinely monitor the quality of water on their aircraft. The action came after an EPA investigation of 327 US and foreign flag airlines at 19 airports during 2004 found total coliform contamination in the drinking water in 15% of aircraft. Total coliform is an indicator that other disease-causing organisms (pathogens) could be in the water and potentially affect people’s health. Polyfuel adds Imperial expert to advisory board US-based PolyFuel, which specializes in engineered membranes for fuel cells, has announced that Dr Anthony Kucernak has been appointed to its Technical Advisory Board, joining Dr John Appleby and Dr Robert Savinell. The board is focused on developing technical insights about fuel cells, the role of fuel cell membranes and systems, and how PolyFuel can optimally contribute to moving the industry forward. Dr Kucernak is currently head of the Solid Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell Research Group and Reader in Physical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London, UK.

flash technologies. It will also compare, for all three main desalination technologies, risk allocation and mitigation factors, structure of capital, and fixed and variable operational costs. In addition, tariff structures and basic financial modeling of a desalination plant will be illustrated. The course will provide a comparative analysis of each desalination process with advantages, disadvantages and future developments highlighted. It will be of interest to students, end-users, turn-key contractors and developers who wish to gain a more detailed understanding of desalination and the associated economic and financial issues. Senior managers and investors, including bankers, who wish to gain a more detailed understanding of the process leading to implementation of a desalination plant, will also benefit from attending. growth for our bioscience business accelerated as planned.’ The company also reported the first revenues from its recently completed MicroSafe and NovAseptic acquisitions. Excluding revenues from these acquisitions, it achieved revenue growth of 11% in constant currency terms — which is an indicator of the underlying strength of the firm’s business and the results of its initiatives to improve its performance, says Madaus. Madaus adds: ‘We continue to execute our growth strategy launched during June 2005. Our recent acquisitions tie directly to our product and service expansion strategy for our bioprocess business, and their integration is on track. We also initiated an important alliance with Gen-Probe Inc for rapid molecular testing in biopharmaceutical production facilities, with the first products from that alliance expected during 2007.’ Contact: Millipore Corporation, 290 Concord Road, Billerica, MA 01821, USA. Millipore’s revenues rise
Steel filter media added to Tetratex range
US-based Millipore Corporation has posted strong results for its third quarter to 1 October 2005. The company announced that its third-quarter revenues totalled $240 million — up 14% compared with the corresponding period in 2004. In constant currency terms, revenue growth was 13%. For the first nine months, revenues amounted to $735 million, which represents an increase of 12% on the equivalent period a year earlier. In constant currency terms, revenue growth was 10% for the first nine months of 2005. Martin Madaus, Millipore’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented: ‘I am pleased with our operational execution which resulted in solid revenue growth during the third quarter, a seasonally slow quarter for the company. Growth was particularly strong in sales of chromatography media and filtration products to biotechnology customers. Revenue
Donaldson Membranes, a USbased manufacture of expanded microporous PTFE membranes, films and laminates, has added polyester stainless steel filter media to its Tetratex Release range. Tetratex Release Anti-Static Polyester Stainless Steel is most suited to applications where there is an increased risk of an explosion occurring because dust is present. Donaldson says that this media uses stainless steel fibres that minimize the risk of shedding. It is laminated with Tetratex Release, a highly permeable membrane that acts as a primary dust cake, and is suitable for use where dust particles are primarily larger than 5 µm. Manufactured from PTFE fluropolymer resin, the membrane is a chemically inert material that virtually eliminates concerns regarding potential filter contamination. The material maintains performance and provides optimum airflow at a reduced pressure drop,
resulting in extended bag service life and energy savings. Tetratex Release Anti-Static Polyester Stainless Steel is accredited to EXAM certification and is tested in accordance with DIN standard 54345, which covers the testing of textiles and electrostatic reaction, Part 1 and Part 5. (Part 1 determines electrical resistances in terms of volume and surface, while Part 5 assesses the electrical resistance of textile media strips.) Tetratex Release Anti-Static Polyester Stainless Steel can be employed in the potentially explosive manufacturing processes that are used to make products such as animal feed, flour, grain, glucose, sugar, cereals, and in industrial applications that generate coal dust, paper dust, sawdust and steel powders. Water desalination markets studied Germany’s Helmut Kaiser Consultancy has published a study which, it claims, provides an efficient, systematic and reliable way of looking at trends, opportunities and risks in the water desalination industry. The study, entitled Water desalination worldwide for sea water and brackish water 2005–2010–2015, also offers ways of evaluating the current markets and further developments, and identifies and evaluates the growth and profit opportunities within the relevant technology segments. According to the consultancy, the market for water desalination has witnessed a significant upturn during the last few years. Driven by the increasing world population and the diminishing sources of fresh water — a result of global warming, desertification and environmental destruction — many countries in the world have constructed, or are constructing, water desalination plants for water supply. It says that technological innovations have largely been raising the energy efficiency of the desalination
