Sulzer specialises in industrial machinery and equipment, surfacing technology and rotating equipment maintenance. Founded in 1834 in Winterthur, Switzerland, today Sulzer has a network of more than 170 locations worldwide. Sulzer has four divisions: Sulzer Pumps, Sulzer Metco, Sulzer Chemtech and Sulzer Turbo Services. Sulzer Pumps is one of the world’s largest pump manufacturers, specialising in centrifugal pumps and agitators/mixers mainly for the oil & gas, hydrocarbon processing, pulp & paper, power generation and water markets. During 2011, Sulzer acquired Cardo Flow Solutions in a CHF858 million deal. Analysis
Sulzer Pumps’ sales and order intake both exceeded the CHF2 billion mark in 2012. Record sales of CHF2097.5 million reflect the 2011 acquisition of Cardo Flow Solutions and organic growth. The Cardo acquisition also helped to secure order intake of CHF2094.3 million, with the oil & gas and water markets continuing to perform well. Sulzer Pumps’ 2012 operating income was up almost 14% to CHF191.2 million from CHF168.2 million a year earlier.
COMMENT The moderate growth that is forecast for Sulzer’s oil & gas, power and water markets this year is likely to be reflected in Sulzer Pumps’ 2013 order intake, accompanied by increased sales and a slight increase in profitability. Sulzer Pumps’ recent investments in China and Russia should also contribute strongly to the division’s 2013 results. ■
