Unique approach to the universal joint At the recent IFAT ‘99 fair in Munich, KSB Frankenthal featured progressive cavity pumps (also known as eccentric screw pumps) for handling highly viscous media in effluent treatment plantsThese pumps used a novel kind of universal-joint shaft, comprising a pair of sliding-block joints that transfer the rotation of the drive motor onto the singlehelical rotor, eccentrically

KSB’s Getec progressive cavity pump with its novel universal-joint shaft.

According to KSB,a spherical joint rod head transfers the axial forces onto a spherical socket, while the torque acts on the side faces of the sliding blocksThis new joint design enables complete separation of the axial and radial forces. Hence, small joints can accommodate higher torques, and last longer. Detachable joint heads permit replacement of the rotor and mechanical seal without the need to remove the drive shaft. The main objective in designing these new Getec pumps was to prolong the service life of the universal-joint shafts and to reduce the pumps’ spare parts requirement. While conventional joints last about 2000 hours, the new ones should have useful lives in the order of 10 000 hours. Contact: KSB Aktiengeseiischaft D-87228 Frankenthai, Germany. dards for cylinder and storage filling reciprocating pumps, in both reliability and maintenance terms. Cryogenic pump manufacturer, ACD is calling its new high pressure pump line the P2K Range, in recognition of the new millennium. The P2K pump line Includes four configurations: the P2K-S Standard sump with grease lubrication; P2K-0 Standard sump with oil lubrication; PZK-Z Sub-ZeroTM sump with grease lubrication P2K-ZO; and the Sub-ZeroTM sump with oil lubrication. The new range will feature lower operating speeds, improved shaft seal and packing designs, a universal control panel, Improved skid design for easy maintenance, and a large flow range (0.5 - 4.5 gpm or 1.9 - 17.1 Ipm) based on pressure requirements from 3000 to 6000 psi (207 - 414 bar). One P2K pump has been in test at ACD for over a year. Other P2K pumps have been under test at beta sites since October of 1998. Pending the completion of further development issues and performance confirmation testing, ACD plans to release the pump to the market in mid-1999. The fruits of a program of innovation

Four years after denationalization, Termomeccanica, the small Italian firm with an International reach, has announced a significant addition to its line of centrifugal pumps. The occasion marks the launch of the new HSS hydraulic pump, designed, patented and built entirely by Termomeccanica. The company says

this is merely the first result of its latest program of research activities, manufacturing innovation, internal reorganization, new methodology, and believes that the development of the new HSS pump is a sign of the firm’s renewed vitality. Boasting state-of-the-art technology, the HSS can be used in water pumping, including aqueducts, as well as in maritime and industrial applications. The keys to the new unit’s success lie in its small number of parts, light weight and compact size. The pump operates with 60% less vibration, and its simplified construction means repairs times are low. The absence of lubricants in the bearings also means its environmental Impact is minimal. m Super-efficient motor scoops energy prize ABB has won the International EnergyAgency’s Hi-Motor’s competition with two models of AC motor. The winning motor design could save users thousands of pounds in lower maintenance and energy costs, as well as help reduce emissions of CO, and other substances into the environment. The goal of the competition was to establish motors with losses up to 50% lower compared to average units. High efficiency means improved reliability, less downtime and reduced costs. This is because the energy that is not converted into useful work, is lost as heat. The reduced losses will result in a lower temperature rise in the motor. This will increase the lifetime of the motor winding insulation, the bearings and the bearing grease. More efficient motors mean that less power needs to be generated to run the motors, reducing environmental impact. For

instance, a 11 kW motor with 91.1% efficiency can reduce the environmental impact by as much as 21% over the life cycle, compared to one with 89% efficiency, due to its lower energy consumption. It is therefore a better environmental choice, despite needing more copper and iron to manufacture. In tests carried out by Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland and followed by international experts and jury members, both motors exceeded stringent requirements. The smaller ABB motor reached the efficiency value of 90.5% and the larger motor, 96.0%, using the IEC 342 direct method. ABB says the increased efficiency was achieved by using new materials in the stator package, by changing the number of slots in the stator and rotor and by using a special stator winding technique.

Additional hose pump loses a third The latest hose pump from Bredel is 25% stronger, 15% lighter, and uses 20% fewer parts than conventional models, and boasts a footprint that is smaller by a third. Bredel’s SPXSO is the second pump in its new and advanced range of direct-coupled SPX hose pumps. With it, users should be assured of improved durability and ease of maintenance. Hose pumps are an increasingly popular pumping solution in a wide range of industries. Process fluid is kept completely separate from the pump’s mechanical moving parts, with

no seals, valves, diaphragms, glands, immersed rotors, stators or pistons to leak corrode or replace. They also have an excellent ability to handle abrasive slurries; corrosive acids; gaseous fluids, high viscosity mixtures, shear-sensitive products, and high density materials. Bredel’s hose pumps are hygienic, and easy to install, clean and operate. They are also virtually maintenance free, even when running 24 hours per day,
