Letter to the Editor Mr Malcolm Arnold was appointed in 1977 following Peter Clarke’s resignation. He was later helped by D’Arcy Sutherland who came from Adelaide to provide guidance. It was Mr Sutherland’s efforts that resulted in the appointment of Mr Roger Mee.

Dear Sir, In the May 1998 issue of the Journal, the Royal Children’s Hospital Paediatric Cardiac Symposium r is preceded by a history of cardiac surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital. While not regarding myself as totally cognisant of all developments at the R.C.H., there are important and glaring omissions in this history. Mr George Westlake was the first cardiac surgeon appointed to the R.C.H. and remained in that position until 1969. He was the first to perform open heart surgery.

All of these people made significant contributions to the unit and their efforts are well known. It is unfortunate that they were not included in the anonymous contribution on the history of the Unit.

Mr Peter Clarke was appointed in 1970. He was responsible for a large number of innovations including neonatal O.H.S. and correction of T.G.A. He was assisted by Miss Anne Shannahan, the late Mr John Richardson and Mr Tony Wilson.

Society

he Asian-Pacific Society of Cardiology has been active in participating in international cardiology meetings by invitation. The North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE) meeting held in San Diego from 6-9 May 1998 was attended by many members of NASPE and the APSC, and the Society was pleased to take part in an international forum with APSC international attendees chaired by David Hayes and Xin Chen. Presentations were given by Kamal K. Sethi (India) on the management of malignant ventricular arrhythmias in developing Asian countries. Hu Dayi (China) spoke on the management strategies of atria1 fibrillation in developing Asian countries. The meeting was attended by over 100 delegates.

Attending the Third Great Wall International Symposium, Beijing, PRC, were (left to right) Wei Hua, Xin Chen, Graeme Sloman and Runlin Gao, Director of the Department of Cardiology, Fu Wai Hospital.

At the Cardiostim meeting in France, the Asian Pacific Cardiostim symposium was held under the auspices of the APSC chaired by Graeme Sloman with presentations by Harry Mond (Australia) on the cost effectiveness of dual chamber pacing in the Asia Pacific. Delon Wu (Taiwan) spoke on ventricular fibrillation. C.P. Lau (Hong Kong) spoke on the progress and management of atria1 fibrillation. Jitu K. Vohra (Australia) spoke on the use of implantable cardioverter defibrillators. The 1998 Course in Advanced Cardiology held at Epworth Hospital in Melbourne for the APSC ran from l-24 September. The course was attended by 10 full-time participants from the People’s Republic of China, Australia, Philippines and Indonesia. All graduated and received certification. Some stayed after the course for

additional training in echocardiography and electrophysiology. It is planned to hold the next course from 1-24 September 1999; enquiries to Graeme Sloman, Medical Advisor, APSC, fax 61 3 9429 7864. During the latter half of 1998 the activities of the APSC were centred in China. A biennial meeting - the Third Great Wall Symposium on Interventional Cardiology organised to discuss developments in interventional cardiology including electrophysiology was held at the Beijing International Convention Centre. Organised by Hu Dayi from the Beijing Red Cross Chao Yang Hospital in Beijing, this meeting was run in

Events

As Medical Advisor to the APSC, I was invited to present a course at the Rui Jin Hospital, Shanghai No. 2 Medical University, directed by Qi Wenhang. I presented the general philosophy regarding the management of atria1 fibrillation by drugs and devices, and discussed the concept of the use of statins in acute coronary episodes. Cardiology and cardiac surgery in Shanghai is advancing rapidly, and the APSC has offered to assist specific members to obtain further training in such specialties as electrophysiology, ablation, angioplasty and stent placement.

conjunction with staff from the Fu Wai Cardiovascular Centre together with international and national colleagues. Live demonstrations of cases selected for angioplasty, with or without stent implantation, and electrophysiological cases were demonstrated on closed circuit television. A selection of cardiac surgical cases was carried out in the Beijing Red Cross Hospital and the Fu Wai Hospital by Julien Gaer of St George’s Hospital, London. Leading cardiac surgeons from U.S.A., France, Germany and other European countries attended. An innovative presentation was made by Jozef Masura of Slovensko who demonstrated transcatheter treatment of atria1 septal defects. Alain Cribier from France demonstrated his device for catheterisation and mitral valvuloplasty. Shigeru Saito from Japan and Kenneth Kent from U.S.A. discussed electrophysiological surgery and various new aspects of ablation. The symposium was attended by more than 800 physicians, cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, and was well supported by pharmaceutical and device companies.

The APSC has planned a Council meeting to be held in Manila, Philippines, at the time of the ASEAN meeting in December. At that meeting the APSC Council will plan its activities for the next two years and it is hoped to increase the number of postgraduate training courses in both cardiology and cardiac surgery.
