J A J_ Smeets, R Nleuwenhuys and B_ L Roberts, Springer Verlag, 1983 DM348,-/$15000 (Ix + 266 pages) ISBN 3 540 12146 3 This beautifully illustrated volume is, m my opinion, one of the best books on c o m p a r a t w e neurology since The Bram of the Tzger Salamander by C J Herrick in 1948 The topic of the book is especmlly appropriate for any reader interested m an overview of "pnmltwe models' of brain organization, because it was experiments using the Nauta m e t h o d on sharks, about 25 years ago, that first revealed the presence of neocortical and neothalamlc equivalents in cold blooded vertebrates. A t that time, several connectLonal arrangements were found to be similar to m a m m a l s These include the olfactory telencencephahc, thalamtc, tectal, cerebellar and ascending spinal projections These findings have not only drastically altered our view of bram organization in 'lower' forms, but provlded insights into how neuronal o r cults might evolve The parcellatlon theory grew out of such work_ This volume offers a well written, well illustrated and relatively complete view of brain orgamzat~ons in sharks,

volume is centered around these four species, but findings by other investigators m o t h e r species, are incorporated m an objective and intellectually honest m a n n e r This book is, of course, a must for all interested in comparative neurology but should also interest many other

spec~-allst and non-specialists interested in fish neurobtology_ The pubhcations were p r o m p t e d by many recent discoveries of neuronal connections that have slgmficantly e n h a n c e d our understanding of brain orgamzatlon of these forms The delay in publication, according to the editors 'resulted, in part, from the decision to add chapters and, in part, from the necessity of completing neuroanatomlcal experiments carried out as t consequence of the symposium ' This delay has not e n h a n c e d the value of these books as all chapters are somewhat outdated (Northcutt and co-workers quote themselves, only, until 1983). Not only are many highly relevant publications since the symposium not covered, but there are serious questions a b o u t the scientific value of the chapters provided by the editors and co-workers I will deal with the content in general, before expanding on
