Mr John T LaForte General Electric, including the coveted Light Military "Breakthrough A w a r d " in 1960. A Navy veteran, he, Mrs LaForte and their two children live in Delmaer. Mr Walsh joined General Electric in 1952 as a member of the physics training programme and was a sales engineer in the Instrument Department in West Lynn, Massachusetts, for 11 years before he became a vacuum specialist at Vacuum Products. A graduate of Boston College with a bachelor's degree in physics, Mr Walsh lives in Scotia with Mrs Walsh and their four children.
Mr Joseph P Walsh M r Walsh's region is covered by the newly opened Philadelphia and Washington offices in addition to the established New York and Boston branches. Activities are co-ordinated from the headquarters in Schenectady.
Varian elections Varian Associates of Palo Alto, California, have announced the election of D r Martin Packard as Vice-President, Analytical Instrument Division, and Mr Patrick Dorney as Vice-President, Vacuum Products Division. D r Packard received his AB degree from Oregon State College a n d his P h D in physics from Stanford University. He has worked as a research engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corporation and in 1945 he was assigned to the M a n h a t t a n project at the University of California Radiation Laboratory. F r o m 1948 to 1951 he was an instructor in physics at Stanford. He joined Varian Associates in 1951 and was placed in charge of instrument research. In 1963 he was made General Manager of the Analytical Instrument Division. The Analytical Instrument Division manufactures spin resonance a n d mass spectrometers. The Division has also developed a line of superconducting (cryogenic) magnets for use when extremely high magnetic fields are desired. The Division has its headquarters in Palo Alto and has just recently begun manufacturing at a factory in England.
Dr Martin Packard M r Dorney received his BA from F o r d h a m University. F r o m 1945 to 1959 he held several posts in the microwave tube industry. He joined Varian Associates in 1959 as sales manager for the Vacuum Products Division and in 1962 was made Division Manager. He has worked in this Division since its earliest days, and during the past 3 years has directed the Division's progress to its present position in the American high-vacuum industry.
Mr Patrick Dorney The Vacuum Products Division manufactures high-speed ele~ tronic pumps, vacuum systems and a variety of vacuum instruments such as leak detectors, low-energy electron diffraction instruments and electron microscopes. The Division was organised 7 years ago to take advantage of the Varian-invented Vacion pump---a device that is still at the heart of most of the Division's products. The Division has its headquarters in Palo Alto and other manufacturing facilities are in Portland, Oregon, and Turin, Italy.
Societies and symposia The Institute of Physics and The Physical Society: Vacuum Physics Group On 13 May 1965 the newly formed Vacuum Physics G r o u p of The Institute of Physics and The Physical Society held its inaugural meeting in the Physics Department, Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, SW7. In his opening remarks, before an audience of 170, Mr L Holland, Chairman of the Vacuum Physics Group, remarked that Great Britain had made great contributions to low-pressure physics, yet, oddly, had been slow to create a national vacuum organization. Comparison with other countries constantly showed that there was much to learn. 517
