183 chemistry was found to correlate with absorption bands in the AIS data in the 1215-1522-1559 and 1587 nm bands. For geological purposes, the rock mode covering the 1.2-2.4 ttm region was often used. The existence of an extensive library of reference spectra, which has been included in the SPAM software programme, makes AVIRIS and AIS data suitable for identifying clay minerals and determining the composition of weathering products from different rock materials. Most investigations have so far been carried out in desert areas with scarce vegetation, but research is now expanding to more complex areas where vegetation may interfere with the signal from the rocks. The differentiation of limestones, dolomites and gypsiferous rock materials is feasible. Determination of clay minerals, zeolites and serpentine (either as single mineral occurrences or in combination) can be carried out on the basis of the width, depth and shape of their absorption peaks in the spectra. The AIS and AVIRIS projects should be seen as preparatory research into the feasibility of high resolution imaging spectrometry for use in the HIRIS spaceborne system in the mid-90's. The results of the workshop will be published as a JPL publication. (6)
The ISPRS Kyoto Congress is the first congress to be held in Asia. The ISPRS will have the chance to expand its activities in Asia. The ISPRS Kyoto Congress will offer a good opportunity to discuss particular Asian problems on soil erosion, deforestation, sedimentation, agricultural development, pollution, etc. The ISPRS Kyoto Congress will be a bridge between the industrialized countries and developing countries through discussions on the transfer of technical knowhow, international cooperation, joint research, education and training. The ISPRS Kyoto Congress will be a wonderful opportunity to see the very latest in Japanese high technology, for example in electronics, robot engineering, space development, computer-assisted cartography, automated photogrammetry etc. The ISPRS Kyoto Congress will be interdisciplinaryand multidisciplinaryto allow discussion of common or boundary themes, such as GIS or digital mapping, with sister societies such as the FIG or ICA.
Main events of the ISPRS Kyoto Congress (1)
Plenary sessions. After the opening ceremony, the Manufacturer's Forum will be held in order to introduce advanced equipment or systems for photogrammetry and remote sensing. The speakers will be selected from the commercial exhibitors participating in the congress. Before the closing ceremony, a session will be held to review and summarize the technical advances presented in the papers and discussions. (2) Technical sessions. Papers on the following advanced topics will be presented: --Operational or experimental remote sensing systems including global earth observation, high resolution sensors, stereo sensing, synthetic aperture radar, etc. -Digital photogrammetry using a video or CCD camera for real-time or near real-time measurement in connection with stereo matching, and digital image processing. -Digital mapping or computer mapping using analytical plotters and computer-assisted compiling sytems for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or Land Information Systems (LIS). (3) Congress Director's Award for Best Posters. To promote the poster sessions, the best poster from each of the seven poster sessions will be selected by the Congress Director and will receive an award. The evaluation will be made on the basis of subject interest, attractiveness of the poster layout appropriate explanation of the study, etc. (4) Interpretation course. Interpretation exercises using French SPOT images and topographic maps will be planned around KICH in the afternoons of the 6th, 7th and 8th July, '88. The participants are sure to enjoy this course where they must answer questions about the interesting patterns, colors or features on the image.
Computer-assisted information service All information concerning program updates, participants, papers, events, the commercial exhibition, technical tours etc. will be fed into a computer and made available to participants on request. An updated participants list will be available, giving the participants' name, organization, address, nationality, position, hotel where they are staying, etc. In connection with computer-controlled ID numbers, the badges will be classified into various classes, such as organizing committee members, VIP's (e.g. Council Members, Honorary Mem-
185 bers, Financial Commission Members and commission Presidents ), National Delegates, ordinary participants, accompanying persons, commercial exhibitors, etc.
Social events
In addition to the usual parties and social events, special Japanese-style cultural shows will be staged during the Congress. Just before the opening ceremony, traditional Japanese harps will be played. At the welcome party on the second day, there will be a traditional Japanese drum show given by a large group of 30 drummers playing drums of various sizes. A tea-ceremony house located on the KICH campus will be open to all participants during the congress. A free ticket will be provided to each accompanying person. In the morning of July 2nd the second day of the congress there will be a special flower arrangement show for accompanying persons (free of charge). In the afternoon of the same day, an instruction course will be laid on at a cost of 2,000 Yen. Women volunteers will welcome any participant to "SEE KYOTO", as indicated in the second circular.
Commercial exhibition
The commercial exhibition is a very important part of the ISPRS CONGRESS because advanced and new systems or equipment will be on display.
