THE MEMBRANE SOCIETY OF JAPAN Dr. Shuichi Suzuki, Professor of Applied Biochemistry at Tokyo Institute of Technology and a long-standing member of our editorial board, has sent us this communication concerning the Membrane Society of Japan: The Society was established January 1,1978, with the objective of stimulating new ideas in (1) basic research in biological membranes and (2) the applications of synthetic membranes. The organization consists of experts in the fundamental disciplines, such as biochemistry, physiology, physical and polymer chemistry, and chemical engineering, as well as experts in the several areas of potential applications: analytical chemistry, clinical medicine, medical research, food processing, industrial chemical processing, and so on. There are at present over 600 members of the Society and 47 companies are sponsors. Professor Masayuki Nakagaki of Kyoto University serves as president of the society, and he is aided by two vice presidents, 10 trustees, and 23 councilors. The Society sponsors (1) an annual meeting with some 50 papers and about 250 participants, (2) a series of public lectures three times each year by Japanese or foreign membrane scientists, and (3) the bimonthly publication of the journal “Maku” (Membrane), with a current circulation of 900.
