About the cover This month, athletes from around the world will arrive in Beijing, China, for the Summer Olympics. In honor of this event, this month’s issue of the JACI focuses on the theme of sports medicine. As depicted on the cover, a number of these elite athletes suffer from allergic diseases, including asthma. In our Clinical Reviews series, Sandra D. Anderson and Pascale Kippelen (p 225) discuss the connection between airway injury in elite athletes and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). Correct diagnosis is essential, and Kenneth W. Rundell and Joshua B. Slee (p 238), writing for our Mechanisms of Allergic Diseases series, review indirect challenges that can be used to demonstrate asthma or EIB. Treatment of these conditions is not without controversy, and Miles Weinberger (p 251) contributes a provocative editorial on the use of long-acting b2-agonists for exerciseinduced asthma and EIB. In our Allergy Archives series, Sheldon G. Cohen (p 435) takes a look at the history of exercise and asthma. Finally, in an overview editorial, Sergio Bonini and Timothy Craig (p 249) highlight the significance of these topics in light of the upcoming Olympics.
