UNIVERSIDAD DE LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA Departmento de Ingenieria de Procesos Seccion de Medio Ambiente Industrial, Campus Universitario de Tafira, E-35017 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain The research areas of the SEMAI (Seccion de Medio Ambiente Industrial) at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) are water treatment and desalination, environmental engineering and renewable energies. The Section has participated and is currently involved in several R & D projects at local, regional, national and European level in the mentioned fields. The SEMAI conducts also two master programs, which are being given since 1988. These programs ("Master in Desalination and Water Reuse" and "Master in Environmental Engineering") are visited by a considerable number of latin-american postgraduates. The following projects, in which the SEMAI has participated as main contractor or associated partner, have been funded by national and European institutions: Project CYCIT No PB89-0647: "Utilization of Membrane Processes as a Separation Technique" (Supported by the International Commission on Science and Technology, Spain) Project PIE (Plan of Electrotechnical Investigation): "Viability of the Membrane Processes in the Treatment and Reuse of Liquid Efluents of Thermal Plants" (Associated partner: Union Fenosa (Spanish utility); supported by the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Energy. Project LIFE No 92-E-005: "Recuperation and Reuse of Urban and Industrial Wastewater in the Canary Islands" (Partners: RWE (German utility) and several Spanish companies; sponsored by the Directorate General XI of the European Commission) Project JOULE No JOU2-CT92-0155: "Development of a Stand-Alone Photovoltaic Power System for Remote Villages Making Use of Pumped Water Energy Storage" (Associated partners: SAAR, Spain; WIP, Germany; AUA, Greece; ITALENERGIE, Italy; sponsored by the Directorate General XII of the European Commission) Project JOULE No JOU2-CT92-0164: "Masterplan for the Integration of Renewable Energy Sources in European Regions" (Associated partners: STADTWERKE SAARBRUCKEN, Germany; SAAR, Spain; ECAP, Greece; CENET, Germany; sponsored by the Directorate General XII of the European Commission) Project EUROQUEBEC (EQHHPP-WP 500 "Euro Quebec Hydro-Hydrogen Pilot Project"): "H2-Use in the Canary Islands"

Project JOULE No JOU2-CT93-0303: "Strengthening Cooperation Among Leading Utilities on Development and Integration of Renewable Energies" (member of the Eure-group and collaborator in AREA 2: technology transfer to Eastern Europe and Developing Countries; partners: RWE, Germany; Union Fenosa, Spain; ENEL, Italy; etc; sponsored by the Directorate General XII of the European Commission) The SEMAI intends to make further research in the field of the renewable energies in collaboration with regional, national and international institutions and companies and the European Community. Several submitted proposals (containing studies as well as concrete installations) are waiting for acknowledgment.
