Stabilizers
Stabilizing polypropylene fibres
Anox FiberPlus is suitable for polypropylene applications ranging from hygienic and medical goods to carpet pile and backing. Great Lakes Chemical Corporation's Anox™ FiberPlus polymer stabilizer blends are designed specifically for the stabilization of polypropylene fibres. The stabilizer blends combine Great Lakes' stabilizers into proprietary blends, with each designed to offer a unique combination of properties in a free-flowing, non-dusting product form to ensure accurate incorporation during fibre manufacturing. Powder blend versions are also available.
UV stabilizer imparts no colour ColorMatrix says its latest proprietary stabilizers can provide blocking of less than 1% transmission at wavelengths up to 390 nm in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging without imparting any colour to the polymer. It says generic ultraviolet (UV) additives and resins compounded with UV stabilizers usually provide adequate protection up to wavelengths of 370 nm, but in many cases the lower intensity wavelengths up to 400 nm and sometimes beyond can result in product degradation. Where necessary the UV additives can be combined with specific colour formulations to provide controlled blocking over a range of wavelengths into the visible region. According to Great Lakes, Anox FiberPlus allows manufacturers of polypropylene fibre to achieve good process stability and colour protection, as well as resisting gas fading. UV stability and long term heat aging can be controlled based on the durability and ultraviolet (UV) protection needs of the finished product, says the company. Anox FiberPlus blends are suitable for use in both non-cracked and cracked
polypropylene fibres. In the production of cracked fibre grades, peroxide is generally added to polypropylene to increase the melt flow index of the polymer and to narrow the molecular weight distribution. Using the blends requires much less peroxide than other stabilizer systems, says the company, and therefore reduces material costs. Anox FiberPlus blends are suitable for use in applications ranging from hygienic and medical goods to carpet pile and backing, ropes, outdoor clothing, and agro/ geotextiles. At the end of 2003, Great Lakes introduced Anox 20, a hindered phenolic antioxidant with a non-organotin catalyst. The primary antioxidant is used to protect polyolefins, styrenics, engineering thermoplastics, adhesives, and elastomers from degradation caused by heat and oxygen. 'Green' alternative to mixed metal stabilizers Dover Chemical Corporation's PhosBooster® products for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds are designed as an environmentallyfriendly alternative to mixed metal stabilizers. Using complex phosphate esters to improve performance and reduce processing costs, the products contain no heavy metals or solvents. When used in place of conventional mixed metal stabilizers, the additives eliminate heavy metals and substantially reduce levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Unlike mixed metal stabilizers such as barium/cadmium (Ba/Cd) or barium/zinc (Ba/Zn) systems, PhosBooster products do not need to use heavy metals to improve their performance. phosphates in its products yield better products and reduce costs. Applications include medical tubing, refrigerator gaskets, flooring and wall coverings, swimming pool liners, automotive trim and roofing membrane. Compared with traditional mixed metal stabilizers, Dover Chemical says its products provide better heat stability, clarity, weatherability and printability. In filled flexible applications, PhosBoosters are said to improve heat stability and broaden the processing window, allowing processors to run hotter and faster.
