IFToMM Reports VIIIth IFToMM EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING Short Information The meeting took place at Jadwisin, Poland, on 14-16 September 1976, simultaneously with the International Symposium on Theory and Practice on Robots and Manipulators. The reason for the combining of these two events was because of the mutual interests of many IFToMM Executive Council Members in the subject of the Symposium.
In attendance were Prof. L. Maunder, President; Acad. I. I. Artobolevskii, Past-President; Prof. A. Morecki, Secretary-General; Prof. M. Rankers, Treasurer; Prof. A. Bessonov, Prof. G. Bianchi, Prof. K. Luck, Prof. J. Phillips, Prof. B. Roth (Members), and Prof. M. Konstantinov, Prof. J. Oderfeld and Prof. E. Stanchev. The observers were Prof. L. Sobrero, Secretary-General of CISM; Dr. J. Nieto, Nieto, Spain; Dr. J. Angeles, Mexico; Prof. H. J. Warnecke and Eng. D. Schraft, G. F. H.; Prof. J. Kato, Japan; Prof. J. Vertut, France and Prof. A. Seireg, U.S.A. The Principal Decisions were as Follows To accept Spain's application for membership in IV category, subject to approval at the next General Assembly. To welcome the possibility of application from Japan and from Mexico and to encourage an application from France. To agree to the proposal for a joint CISM-IFI'oMM Technical Committee for Robots and Manipulators. That the Constitution Committee should prepare revised statements of the objectives of Commisions in consultation with Commissions Chairmen for presentation to the next general Assembly. The preliminary report on the preparation for the Fifth World Congress in Montreal in 1979 presented by Professor Osman was approved. The reports from the following Chairmen of Commissions and Technical Committees were accepted: Prof. Konstantinov, Commission for Education Prof. Bessonov, Commission for Conferences Prof. Crossley, Commission for Publications (presented by Prof. A. Morecki) Prof. Phillips, Commission for History Prof. Roth, Technical Committee for Robots and Manipulators Dr. Dudley, Technical Committee for Gearing (presented by Prof. M. Dietrich) Prof. Parzsewski, Technical Committee for Rotordynamics. It was agreed that the Secretary-General should continue activity to develop contacts with new potential members of IFToMM. The Treasurer's report was presented by Prof. Rankers and accepted by the Executive Council. The allocations for the period up to December 1977 should be $12,000 total. It was agreed that any further developments should be preceded by a proposal for a joint Symposium in two or three years time, subject to discussion between Prof. Bianchi and Prof. Bessonov. Suggested topics were Man under Vibration, Noise and Rotor Dynamics: if a subject were agreed, a proposal would be made by the Italian National Committee. 215

The President agreed to send a congratulatory letter to Prof. em. Dr. habil W. Lichtenheldt, Honorary Member of IFToMM on his 75th birthday on 30 October 1976.

SECOND CISM-IFToMM INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THEORY AND PRACTICE ON ROBOTS AND MANIPULATORS Short Information According to the decision taken after the 1st Symposium held in Udine in September 1973, the 2nd Symposium was prepared by the International Organizing Committee and Local Organizing Team and was organized in "RO.MAN.SY.-76", Jadwisin, Poland, 14-17 September 1976, in the Conference Palace belonging to the Society of Civil Engineers, 35 km east of Warsaw. Meetings of the Organizing Committee were held prior to the Symposium in 1974 and 1976 in Poland. During the meetings the list of participants, observers, topics and papers were discussed and approved. All organizational problems such as accommodations, registration fees, financial support for lectures and observers were prepared. The Symposium was attended by more than 140 scientists, engineers, observers from different companies and NSF. Twentyone countries were represented: Austria, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, GDR, GFR, Hungary, Italy, Holland, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, U.K., U.S.A., U.S.S.R. and Yugoslavia. The main topics were: Mechanics; Biomechanics of Motion; Control of Motion; Sensors; Artificial Intelligence; Synthesis and Design, and Applied Robotics. In addition two panels were organized: WhereAre We Going and Criteria for Performance Evaluation. More than 50 papers were presented in 9, half-day sessions. Two movie sessions were organized and more than 12 movies were shown. A large interest level by participants was noticable at each of the sessions. The conference room was full until the last moment of the conference. The local team prepared the preprints including 44 papers sent prior to April 1976. A printed symposium proceedings book is under preparation by Polish Publisher House in Cooperation with Elseviere. This book was published in 1978. As was agreed the next 3rd Symposium held in Udine in September 1978. The Chairman was Prof. B. Roth, Stanford University; Vice Chairmen, Prof. L. Sobrero, CISM; Prof, A. Morecki, Technical University of Warsaw, and Scientific Secretary, Dr. K. Kedzior, T. U. of Warsaw. The Organizing Committee Meeting was held in Poland in April 1977.
