To our great dismay we learned of the demise of member of the Editorial Board, Johannes Holthusen We vividly remember his warm and courteous personality, the lively concern he took in our life and work. His humaneness, his sense-f beauty, his orientation towards life and the poet's modelling of life as a whole, are reflected in his academic writings which cover a wide range of studies, of Old Russian, South Slavic and Russian literatures. A rare combination of outstanding scholarship and refined artistic taste is most subtly expressed in his studies of 20th Century Russian literature. The starting-point in this favoured area of his research is his epoch-making Habilitationsschrift "Studien zur Asthetik und Poetik des russischen Symbolismus". Unforgettable in his scholarly work are the fine pieces of analysis of Blok's sound-magic and of Brjusov's intricate poetic constructions. Afterwards his interest in Russian modernism led him to eminent studies of Belyj, SoloMajakovskij, Chlebnikov, Babel', Zabolockij, iiN, Pil'njak and other poets and prose writers. We treasure the memory of an inspiring personality and a beloved colleague. our
