In memoriam Professor Dr. med. Johannes Lang

Dr. med. Johannes Lang, Professor emeritus, former chairman of the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Medical Faculty, University of Wiirzburg, Wiirzburg, Germany, died on September 19, 2003 at the age of 80. He was a graduate of the University of Munich, where he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1952 and other degrees (as a 'Privat-Dozent') in 1957. In 1965 Dr. Lang became chairman of the Department of Anatomy, University of Hanover. In 1967 he was elected chairman and head of the Institute of Anatomy, University of Wiirzburg. From 1973 to 1975 he served as Dean and from 1975 to 1989 as Vice-Dean of the Medical Faculty, University of Warzburg. Dr. Lang's research focused on the microanatomical and histological appearance of pleural, peritoneal, synovial and cerebral vessels and subsequently on many topographical issues concerning the cranial and cervical regions. His research was greatly esteemed by a large number of clinicians for its significant contribution to the

progress of expanding clinical disciplines such as ENT, maxillo-facial and neurosurgery. Dr. Lang published more than 200 original papers in well-known national and international journals. 180 students who worked in his laboratories achieved success with the writing of their theses. The culmination of his life's work are the two textbooks (1) Praktische Anatomie, Kopf: Gehirn- und Augenschiidel, (2) Praktische Anatomie, Kopf." Ubergeordnete Systeme (Springer, Berlin). These volumes, which are still frequently cited, continued the famous series of standard works on topography which were primarily written and edited by T. v. Lanz and W. Wachsmuth. Further outstanding books by Dr. Lang are the atlases of clinical anatomy entitled Skull base and related structures (Schattauer), Clinical Anatomy of the posterior cranial fossa and its foramina (Thieme), Klinische Anatomic des Ohres (Springer), Klinische Anatomie der Halswirbelsiiule (Thieme) und Klinische Anatomie der Nase, NasenhOhle und NebenhOhlen (Thieme). Professor E J. Janetta, Neurosurgeon, University of Pittburgh, PS, USA, has commented thus: "These books enhance Lang's status as the ultimate neuroanatomical collaborator and colleague of contemporary neurosurgeons". In appreciation and recognition of his work, Dr. Lang was made an honorary member of the German Association of Neurosurgeons and German Association of Otorhinolaryngologists. He also served as an Associate Editor of the SURGICAL R A D I O L O G I C ANATOMY from its very beginnings. Dr. Lang's death is a tragic loss: to the staff of the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology, to the members of the Medical Faculty, University of Wiirzburg, and to the members of the Anatomische Gesellschaft and many other academic and scientific associations and societies. He was a delightful man, and one who combined vast academic skills and knowledge with wit and a sense of humour. We will miss him badly. Our deepest sympathies go to Mrs. Lang and her family.
