10th ETRO Advanced Teaching Course on Thrombosis, Cracow, Poland (11-17 October 2009) The Xth ETRO Advanced Teaching Course on Thrombosis was held in Krakow, Poland, on Oct. 11-17, 2009. The ancient capital of Poland hosted already a similar successful course affiliated to ETRO in September 2001. The program of the 2009 ETRO Course encompassed a broad spectrum of hemostasis and thrombosis-related topics from basic science to clinical practice. There were 9 sessions. Each session ended with a 30 to 45-minute discussion that provided the opportunity to exchange opinions and views. A booklet containing abstracts of the lectures was provided. The main topics covered by the 2009 ETRO course included: Fibrin clot structure/function (lectures by M. Blombäck, L. Muszbek, R. Ariëns); Fibrinolysis (R. Lijnen, C.S. Cierniewski, P.J. Declerck); Venous thromboembolism (S. Costanzo, P.A. Kyrle, S. Eichinger; W. Tomkowski); Thrombosis and Women's Health (P.M. Sandset, K. Zawilska, I. Pabinger, M.B. Donati); Antiphospholipid syndrome (G. Reber, P. de Moerloose, J. Musiał); Platelets (H. Deckmyn, M. Cattaneo, F. Violi, C. Cerletti); Arterial thrombosis (P. Reitsma, G. Y. Lip, L. Iacoviello); Tissue factor (B. Østerud, B. Engelmann, T. Barrowcliffe, J. Crawley); Thrombin (J. Huntington, H. ten Cate, S. Butenas, A. Undas). All lecturers presented results of their own cutting-edge research in the background of the current knowledge in this field. A unique feature of the ETRO meeting was a good chance for informal contacts between the Faculty and the Participants.

Our meeting has had 50 attendees from 10 countries. Participants of the ETRO course came from a variety of disciplines ranging from basic sciences, hematology, cardiology to surgery, which clearly shows a growing interest in hemostasis and thrombosis among physicians. Several participants represented basic science researchers and people working for the pharmaceutical companies, which proved that this ETRO meeting can provide a valuable platform for sharing experiences, needs and concepts. We all have unique memories from this meeting despite unseasonably cold weather.
