Beck, Green, H a m m e r and Thorn whereas the real-life application would require measurements on high-pressure/high-integrity steel pipeline; the practical problems of adapting the technique to the latter situation have not been examined though they are considered to be resolvable. Acknowledgements
E. A. Hammer wishes to thank the Royal Norwegian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research for providing a grant for his year spent at UMIST. The authors are grateful for the help of other members of the team associated with the project, including Andrew Morton and Ramiro Palmer, for their experimental and academic support. Aslaug Kalstad for preparing the diagrams, and Joyce Edge and Gerd Fiksdal for typing the several manuscrips associated with this project. Thanks are also due to Mr W. H. Topham of BP International Ltd, London, for his helpful comments on the manuscript in its draft form.

10th IMEKO World Congress Delegates from 31 countries attended the 10th IMEKO World Congress in Prague between 22 and 26 April 1985. The Czechoslovak Member Organisation, CSVTS Committee of Applied Cybernetics, organised the Congress of the Confederation under the title 'New Measurement Technology to Serve Mankind'. There were 329 papers presented at four plenary sessions, 32 section meetings and six poster sessions. Main topics included • • • • •
measurement theory and signal processing measuring systems and diagnostics measurement in mechanics and laser metrology measurement of force, temperature and environmental parameters measurement in flow, electricity, biomedicine and robotics.
Twelve round table discussions and eight technical visits and numerous social events rounded off the programme. The Congress was officially co-sponsored by IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control), OIML (International Organisation of Legal Metrology) and EOQC (European Organisation for Quality Control). MEACO '85 - an exhibition of measuring instruments,

automation devices and computers - was held concurrently with the Congress with exhibitors from eight European countries on a total area of 500 m 2. The Congress proceedi n g s - A C T A IMEKO 1985 - will be published in five volumes (more than 3000 pages) by the end of the year. Council meeting
During the Congress week the General Council of IMEKO had its 28th Session and approved the admission of the 30th Member Organisation of IMEKO, the Committee for Metrology of the Spanish Association for Quality Control. New officers were elected for the next three-year period: Mr George Toumanoff (USA) - President Dr Tam§s Kem~ny (Hungary) -Secretary General Prof Jean Weiler (Switzerland) - Treasurer. IMEKO Xl - the 11th Triennial World Congress 'Instrumentation for the 21st Century' will take place from 16 to 21 October 1988 in Houston, Texas, USA. The organiser will be the Instrument Society of America, the US National Member Organisation of IMEKO, and the co-sponsor will be the National Bureau of Standards.
