the refugee influx, medication became scarce at supply because of the large quantities given to the dispensaries and also the high percentage of refugees suffering from asthmatic conditions, psychoses, and seizures. This situation brought about a heavy use of isoproterenol inhalers, terbutaline, aminophylline, chlorpromazine injection, phenobarbital, and phenytoin. The problem was solved by arranging a purchase agreement with a drug distributor. Before that was accomplished, procurement runs had to be made to civilian pharmacies and hospitals in the area to try to obtain some of the drugs that were drastically needed. From May 24 to June 26 the Ft. McCoy MUST pharmacy dispensed 2,500 prescriptions and averaged 1,000 work units daily-with the help of two or three technicians during the campaign. I spent 32 days at Ft. McCoy, which received more than 15,000 refugees. The pharmacy technicians played a tremendous role during the entire operation, being actively involved in every aspect of pharmacy. They worked many long hours with little sleep and yet maintained high morale and tremendous dedication to duty. We pharmacists could not have accomplished our tasks without their support. The Army support elements demonstrated the ability to respond to a crisis . on extremely short notice, moving to the designated locations, setting up three refugee camps, and maintaining them from May 9 to June 26, 1980. June 26 marked the end of the Army mission and subse. quent turnover of the Cuban refugee operations to the Public Health Service. Our mission was to provide emergency medical care for the Cuban refugees. In our attempt to accomplish this mission we encountered many challenges and obstacles. But through perseverance we were able to overcome adversity and leave our respective refugee camps with a feeling of satisfaction and a sense of pride, knowing that we had made a contribution as pharmacists by helping those who were in need. o American Pharmacy Vol. NS20, No. 11, November 1980/657
