Languages: English NTIS Prices: $18.95 Country of Publication: United States Conducted by Louis Harris & Associates between October 30 and November 17, 1986, among a national probability sample of 1,273 American adults, this survey gathered information about public knowledge and opinion on science and technology issues in general, and genetic engineering and biotechnology in particular. This background paper presents the data obtained from that survey 1250271 DE87004660/XAB Biological Engineering for Sustainable Biomess Production Shen~ S. Argonne National Lab., IL. Languages: English Document Type: Conference proceeding NTIS Prices: $9.95 Country of Publication: United States A new discipline has evolved in efforts to engineer photosynthetic production systems that produce biomass feedstocks efficiently, economically and with minimal adverse environmental impact. In this talk an overview is given of how biological engineering systems are designed to produce energy and novel material products within the framework of existing market infrastructure. Practical examples of biological engineering systems which employ components based on genetic engineering, species propagation, modern agricultural techniques, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering are analyzed for worldwide materials application and environmental conservation. 9 refs., 6 figs. Biotechnology Colwell, R. K. Dept. of Zoology, California Unlv., Berkeley. Sponsor: Department of Energy, Washington, DC. Report No.: ORNL/M-243 24 Sep 86 13p Languages: English NTIS Prices: $9.95 Country of Publication: United States A study was made of the June 26, 19867 Federal Register notice concerning the Coordinated Framework for Regulation of Biotechnology (51 FR23301-23350), and of the Department of Agriculture's accompanying Advanced Notice of Proposed Guidelines for Biotechnology Research (51 FR23351-23383). This letter describes this study and responds to the request for public comment on those documents. While we endorse the goal of developing criteria to distinguish proposals unlikely to present an unreasonable risk from those involving a greater number of risk factors, we have serious concerns about
