17TH NATIONAL AORN CONGRESS ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA, FEBRUARY 22-26, 1970 “The Prismatic World of OR Nursing” is your world-multi-faceted, reflecting, filtering, and assimilating the ever-changing developments in the field of patient care. At this moment, plans are being finalized to bring “The Prismatic World of OR Nursing” into focus in Anaheim, California, on February 22-26, 1970. The highlights of this 17th National AORN Congress, like the prism which is the general theme, are many and varied, beginning with the keynote speech, “Transplanting the Heart Back into OR Nursing,” to be delivered by the world-renowned, heart-transplant surgeon, Dr. Denton Cooley. The daily themes of the Congress have been arranged around the scheme of Anaheim’s main attraction, Disneyland. Thus, Monday’s theme, “Adventureland,” will encompass the day-to-day challenges that face the OR nurse. Included here are such topics as: “Personal Goal Setting for Increased Management Effectiveness,” featuring Dr. John R. Vande Water of Los Angeles as chief speaker; “Transplants and Implants,” to be discussed by Dr. William P. Murphy, Jr., of Miami; and “Age of Change and Opportunity,” a panel discussion on the training and development of workers for the health care team. “Fantasyland,” on Tuesday, can be described as dreams and projections that have come into their future. During the intriguing session, “Twilightland,” Dr. William McCall of Anaheim will consider the general use of hypnosis and its importance as an adjunct to anesthesia. Other sessions scheduled for Tuesday are: “Fantastic Problems and Potential-Liver Transplants,” to be discussed by Dr. Israel Penn of Denver; and “I Took a

Trip,” a consideration of drug addiction as a medical problem by Dr. J. Thomas Ungerleider. Wednesday is “Tomorrowland,” and the sessions scheduled include : a panel discussion centered around “The Nurse of Tomorrow”; “Construction and Reconstruction in Orthopedics”; “Fantastic Reality,” a consideration of the future cost of hospital care and a look at health care planning by Mr. Samuel J. Tibbits of San Francisco; and a panel discussion on “People Mover-Health Team Concept,” a look at comprehensive health care. The final meetings, Thursday’s look at “Frontierland,” will feature films on Management and Pediatrics and a session on “SelfActualization” which will consider how the nurse can improve her working, patient, social, and personal relationships. A look at “Nurse Recruitment-Today’s State” is also planned for Thursday. Committee Chairmen for the 17th National Congress are: Dorothy Kehoe, General Chairman; Nancy Mehaffy, Program Chairman; Helen Martin, Registration Chairman; Jane Campbell, Information and Arrangements Chairman; Betty J. Nielsen, Monitorial Chairman ; Carol Childs, Membership Chairman ; Sally A. Schrader, Scientific, Education and Research Exhibits, Chairman; and Patricia Jensen, Public Relations Chairman. As this very brief look at Congress highlights makes clear, the 17th National AORN Congress is beginning to take shape as the most exciting and challenging look at the operating room nurse and her world to date.
