Stephen H. Safe, the 1989 Burroughs Wellcome Toxicology Scholar awardee, is Professor of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology at Texas A&M University. He was born in 1940 and received his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Queens University. He obtained his Ph.D. from Oxford in 1965 and did postdoctoral work at Harvard University. Prior to joining Texas A&M in 198 1, he served as Professor at the University of Guelph, Canada. Highlights of his recent research include studies on the effects of structure on activity, the role of the dioxin receptor in PCB toxicity and the induction of cytochrome P450 isozymes by structurally diverse halogenated biphenyls, the effects of TCDD antagonists, and the characterization of TCDD as a novel class of antiestrogens. Dr. Safe, with the support of the University, will continue to develop, expand, and coordinate toxicology research and training endeavors in the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, and Medicine. The University has marshalled considerable financial and physical resources to support the Burroughs Wellcome Toxicology Scholar Award. In particular, the areas of emphases will be genetic, cellular, molecular, veterinary/regulatory, and food toxicology.
