AIR MEDICAL PHYSICIAN ASSOCIATION Medical Director of the Year Thomas R. Scaggs, MD The Medical Director of the Year Award was established in 2000 to recognize the AMPA member physician who has made outstanding contributions to his or her own program. Nominations for this award of recognition come from individual programs—from the flight crews, administrators, and/or program staff. The award is given to the medical director whose personal involvement in the program is considered to be an invaluable part of the team’s success and whose contributions to medical direction, education, quality care, outreach, safety, and team morale are part of the essential fabric of the program. The 2009 Medical Director of the Year is Dr. Thomas Scaggs of Illinois Carle Foundation Hospital AirLife. The AirLife team writes, “Dr. Scaggs has the respect of every team member of this program. We admire his administrative abilities, strategic planning, and collaborative practices with outlying community hospitals; uncompromising standard for delivering the best care possible; and his ability to step in and work side-by-side with this flight team as a crewmember. Without Dr. Thomas Scaggs, Carle’s AirLife program would be without a valuable champion, and thousands of rural patients would be without access to high-level critical care.”

2009 Distinguished Physician Eric R. Swanson, MD The Distinguished Physician Award was established in 1993 to recognize a physician who has significantly contributed to the air medicine profession through a lifetime of achievement and service. The 2009 recipient is Dr Swanson, the medical director of the University of Utah AirMed transport program in Salt Lake City and associate professor (clinical) in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He has served as co-editor of Air Medical Journal since 2006. Dr. Swanson is an AMPA Medical Director of the Year winner, EMS Physician of Year for the Utah Department of Health Bureau of EMS, and “Setting the Standard” Physician Recognition Award winner at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, and he has served two terms as an AMPA board member. He is a member of the Air Medical Research Institute advisory board and was an invited participant to the Foundation for Air-Medical Research and Education International Forum on the Global Future of Air Medicine at the 2008 AIRMED Congress in Prague, Czech Republic. Dr. Swanson is a well-known and respected speaker on airway management at the Air Medical Transport Conference and Critical Care Transport Medicine Conference (CCTMC). He has received many research awards, often first place, at the CCTMC Scientific Forum. His contributions to air medicine have been significant, and his dedication is an example of commitment to the AMPA mission of “safe, efficacious, critical care transportation by promoting quality medical direction research, education, leadership, and collaboration.”
