movement thereof relative to the worktable during completion of the cut. The flexure members permit lateral movement of the friction member relative to the cutting tool during completion of the cut. A locking ring selectively prevents lateral movement of the friction member relative to the cutting tool.

Apparatus for simultaneously changing all of the tools in a multiple spindle machining center is provided with a number of tool carrying devices, each device corresponding to a different one of the spindles. Each tool carrying device is capable of selectively engaging each of a number of tools which are dedicated for use with one of the spindies, and is further capable of carrying engaged tools between one of the spindles and one of a plurality of tool storage magazines. A first linear translation device moves each of the tool carrying devices in parallel relationship with a first axis when the tool carrying devices are carrying tools between the spindles and the magazines, and a second linear translation device moves the tool carrying devices in parallel relationship with a second axis during such tool carrying operations, the first and second axes being in orthogonal relationship. The tool carrying devices are mounted upon a single rigid bar, the axis of the bar being orthogonal to both the first and second axis. A rotational device selectively rotates the bar and the tool carrier devices around the axis of the bar during tool carrying operations.
A machining center of the type incorporating a spindle for driving tools wherein the spindle is movable rectilinearly along the axis of the spindle for engaging tool holders to move tool holders, and tools secured thereto, into an operative position wherein the tools contact a work piece. The rotational speed of the spindle, as well as its rectilinear motion, is controlled by a programmed numerical control center which also controls the bed upon which the work piece is mounted; the bed is movable, at predetermined rates, in the X, Y and Z directions. A positioning means, such as turret or carousel, is positioned beneath the spindle and is used to hold several tool holders, each of which supports tools for use in the machining operation. The tool holders are temporarily secured in the positioning means and are removed therefrom through the operation of the lowering spindle; the tool holders are formed in three sections, the first of which contacts and is driven by the rotating spindle. The second section of the tool holder is held against rotation by an anti-rotation device which operates through a coupling secured at one end to a vertically movable ram and at the other end to the second section of the tool holder. The tool holder also includes a third section that incorporates a tool holding spindle; the first section and the third section of the tool holder are interconnected by a drive coupling that permits significant variations from the conventional spindle rotational velocity and rectilinear motion. Selected drive couplings are provided for three dimensional angular displacement of the tool holding spindle relative to the rotational axis of the spindle on the machine center. The sensor includes at least one pressure chamber that is filled with an incompressible fluid, a membrane that forms at least one wall of the pressure chamber, a pressure transducer measuring the pressure within the pressure chamber, and a pressure arm whose first end is secured to a machine tool member at a location at which force and torque are to be measured and whose second end bears on the membrane. By appropriately choosing the number and disposition of pressure chambers, membranes, and pressure arms, output signals from the corresponding pressure transducerS are related to selected components of transverse force torque, and axial l~. of the machine tool member. Various emments of the sensor for use with machine tools having a rotating tool and machine tools having a stationary tool are disclosed, and techniques are described in which these embodiments can be used to determine the angle between itransverse force exerted on the machine tool member and a stationary axis of the machine [tool, to determine the plane of transverse loading ,of the transverse force, and to compensate the pressure measurements in accordance with the determined plane of transverse loading.

A machine tool apparatus having a bifurcated column structure comprising spaced apart columns which enclose and slidably secure the mounting end of an arm, the opposite end of which receives a rotating spindle adapted to engage and rotate a variety of machining tools. The bifurcated column structure has three primary ways having their guiding surfaces arranged generally in one plane, and the third having its guiding surface in a plane orthogonally related to the plane of the first ways. The column structure also includes three secondary ways positioned in opposed relation to the respective primary ways. Antifriction bearings are connected to the mounting end of the arm in opposed relation to the three primary and three secondary ways and serve to guide the arm for vertical movement within the column structure. Two sets of bearings are provided, one set being disposed generally in a first horizontal plane near the upper end of the arm, and the other set disposed in a horizontal plane near the lower end of the arm so that structural rigidity for the arm against movement about a horizontal axis is achieved. The bearings facing the secondary gibs are connected to a preloading piston and cylinder arrangement which forces the bearings attached thereto against their respective secondary ways, thereby urging the arm against the three primary ways.
