REACTOR

METHOD OF CONTROL OF A NUCLEAR REACTOR BY MOVEMENT WITHIN THE CORE OF THIS REACTOR, OF GROUPS OF CONTROL RODS

Morihiko Sato, Yokohama, Japan assigned to Tokyo Shibaura Denki Kabushiki Kaisha A nuclear reactor of the type which uses liquid metal as primary and secondary coolants, and wherein the reactor vessel contains a core and a plurality of vertically extending cylindrical intermediate heat exchangers for carrying out heat exchange between the primary and secondary coolants; primary coolant circulation pumps disposed outside of the reactor vessel; a pipe for conducting to the circulation pump the primary coolant which has passed through the intermediate heat exchangers after leaving the core; and a pipe for guiding the primary coolant discharged from the circulation pump to the core through the reactor vessel.

Pierr Deroubaix, Jean-Pau Millot, Paris, France assigned to Framatome When the control parameter ( D e l t a T ) is within its deadband, a correction of the axial deviation of power (DA) is effected by movement of at least one group of control rods, when DA is outside a predetermined range or deadband straddling a reference value DA ref. The group which is moved is chosen as a function of the sign of DeltaT, of the position of DeltaT with respect to its deadband and of the position of the other groups. When DeltaT is outside its deadband, the differences between the amplitudes of insertion of the groups participating in the control of the reactor are made to vary by stopping or starting of groups selected as a function of the positions of the groups of rods (GI, G2, NI, N2) in the core of the reactor and of the position of DA either with respect to its deadband if DA is outside this deadband, or with respect to DAref, if DA is within this deadband. The invention is in particular applicable to pressurized-water nuclear reactors.

4470947 DOUBLE-CLAD NUCLEAR SAFETY ROD

FUEL

William McCarthy, Donald Atcheson, Swaminathan Vaidyanathan assigned to The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of Energy A device for shutting down a nuclear reactor during an undercooling or overpower event, whether or not the reactor's scram system operates properly. This is accomplished by double-clad fuel safety rods positioned at various locations throughout the reactor core, wherein melting of a secondary internal cladding of the rod allows the fuel column therein to shift from the reactor core to place the reactor in a subcritical condition.
