supply to power an amplifier forming a reference voltage for reference diodes, a first photo cell is provided with a reference light from LED created light directed to the reference. A second LED directs light through the oil mist. The quantity of light is measured by a second photo cell reflecting the light absorbence of the sample, and the output of the two measuring devices is determined in a differential amplifier, driving a meter movement. The direct current signal is at a safe current range for use of the transmitter in a hazardous environment and is inversely proportional to the percent transmission of the signal.

4687337 ATMOSPHERIC AEROSOL EXTINCTIOMETER Harold Stewart, Donald Hansen, Vernon Turner assigned to The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air Force The extinction coefficient of atmospheric aerosol is measured by an instrument in which a single light beam from a graybody source is alternately directed through two similar optical paths to a detector. Each optical path traverses an equal length region of ambient air. Aerosols are filtered from the ambient air region of one optical path .The detector measures the modulation of the incident radiation and its output is a function of the extinction coefficient of the ambient air under test. A second detector is used to monitor the beam power. Processing electronics compute the extinction coefficient of the ambient air under test from the detector outputs. The ambient air regions of the two beam paths are alternately filtered for improved performance.

4687544 M E T H O D A N D A P P A R A T U S FOR D R Y P R O C E S S I N G OF SUBSTRATES Richard Bersin assigned to Emergent Technologies Corporation A method and apparatus for dry processing of a substrate is provided. More particularly, a substrate is exposed to a gas, such as an effluent from a gas plasma, having at least one reactive specie, such as a free radical, the gas having substantially no electrically charged particles present. Simultaneously, the substrate is irradiated with ultraviolet radiation to enhance the reaction rate

in a controlled manner. Also provided is a means for irradiating the wafer with infrared radiation to heat the wafer independently of the irradiation with ultraviolet radiation.

4687605 MANUFACTURING AUTOMATION SYSTEM FOR NUCLEAR FUEL ROD PRODUCTION Francis Cellier, Robert T Graulty, Wendell L Johnson, David M Batson, John C Limpert, Christopher K C Wu, George D Bucher, Clarence D John, John E Steinkirchner, Paula Larouere, Hemant H Shah, Robert A Williams assigned to Westinghouse Electric Corp An automated fuel rod production system includes a radioactive powder fabrication and processing stage, a pellet fabrication stage, a pellet processing stage, a tube preparation stage and a fuel rod fabrication and inspection stage, all of which provide a continuous (paced) mode of operation from the conversion of a radioactive gas to powder, through the fabrication of the powder into pellets, to completion of the assembly of the fuel rods. Extra capacity is designed into the system at critical points in the powder processing and pellet fabrication and processing stages to facilitate the continuous, paced mode of operation.

4687668 CONTINUOUS MICROBIOLOGICAL PRODUCTION OF ACETIC ACID AND VINEGAR Charles Ghommidh, Jean-Marie Navarro, Philippe Girardon, Jean Amen, Montpellier, France assigned to L£3 Air Liquide Societe Anonyme pour ! + 3 Etude et 1+ 3 Exploitation des Procedes Georges Claude Process for continuous production of vinegar by microbiological conversion with oxygen enrichment of ethanol into acetic acid. In a first phase, the micro-biological conversion of ethanol into acetic acid is performed in the presence of air. After consumption of the oxygen in the air, in a second phase, the addition of oxygen, controlled by the demand of the system, is provided by injection of pure oxygen, the aeration gas being
