New Patents from a hot metal billet. A press container is mounted to be substantially axially stationary during extrusion of a billet. A hot billet, a die and a pressure disc are located into the axial throughbore of the container so that the billet is sandwiched between the die and pressure disc, with the pressure disc having a maximum outer diameter between opposite radial faces which is slightly less than the diameter of the axial throughbore to define a diametrical clearance between the pressure disc and the press container. A bolster is located adjacent the pressure disc and is axially fixed to substantially prevent axial movement of the pressure disc in a direction toward the bolster during extrusion. The bolster exerts a relatively insigificant axial force against the container. An elongated stem having an axial passage is moved into the throughbore of the container to press the die toward the bolster, causing the billet to be extruded through the die to create an extrusion product which exits the container through the axial passage in the stem, while extrusion of the billet through the diametrical clearance between the pressure disc and the container is substantially avoided.
4781390 APPARATUS FOR THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE TENSION IN A ROTATING GRIPPING DEVICE OF A MACHINE TOOL Josef Steinberger, Bert Bongartz, Dfederal Republic Of Germana assigned to Paul Forkardt GmbH & Co KG An apparatus for the adjustment of the tension in rotating gripping devices, which are operable with variable power outputs and follow (hysteresis) distinct tension-characteristics for build-up and withdrawal. In order to make possible a stabilization of the tension which is independent from the rotational speed, a desired value for the tension and an internal tolerance allotment for an upper and a lower desired adjustment value are presupposed in a control apparatus. In the control apparatus a leading regulated quantity is produced digitally for the changing of power outputs. The leading regulated quantity is reduced when the desired value approaches a presupposed amount, so that the actual value in presupposed intervals lessens regularly through the regulated quantity reduction under the desired value and is again increased. By an increase of the actual value to one of the upper tolerance allotment presupposed values, the regulated quantity is lessened as a

desired value to the reduction of the tension and overcoming of the hysteresis under allotments of the lower adjusted desired values, until the actual value has fallen to a value between the desired value and the presupposed desired value.
4781512 PALLET CHANGING SYSTEM FOR A MACHINE TOOL Takeshi Ohta, Tetsuro Yamakage, Nishio, Japan assigned to Toyoda Koki Kabushiki Kaisha A pallet changing system for a machine tool including a pallet changing device which is horizontally rotatable for exchanging a pallet on the work table of the tool with another pallet in a standby station. A plurality of pallet storing shelves are arranged in a plurality of concentric circular arrays and each shelf has a plurality of pallet supporting racks located one above another. The standby station forms a part of those circular arrays defining a central space surrounded by the racks. A rotary table is rotatably disposed in the center of that space. A pair of guide posts are upstanding from the rotary table. A structure is vertically movably supported on the posts. A pallet handling fork is provided on the structure horizontally movably to and away from the standby station. A pair of guide rails guide the horizontal movement of the fork. The fork has one end defining a pallet supporting portion. The system further includes a device for rotating the rotary table in an indexed way, a device for moving the vertically movable structure vertically and a device for moving the fork horizontally.
4782208 METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SLITTING METAL STRIPS David A Withrow, Allen White A non-contact cutting system and method cuts a strip of metal into narrow strands having varying width defining successive, longitudinally spaced portions from which end product pieces can be removed. An array of cutting heads is arranged to project cutting beams onto the surface of a metal strip to cut the strand edges in a predetermined pattern whereby a maximum number of end product piece areas is defined on the strip.
