PATENT ABSTRACTS the sapling stage. The post-growth phase production is uncoupled by the inoculation and concentration yield is doubled.
5279955 HETEROFUNCTIONAL CROSSLINKING AGENT FOR IMMOBILIZING REAGENTS ON PLASTIC SUBSTRATES Randall Pegg, Mary S Saunders Heterofunctional crosslinking agents are synthesized that covalently link molecules such as enzymes, cells, proteins and nucleic acids to a plastic substrate. The agents contain a central ring structure having a hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain that binds to a plastic substrate and distal to the hydrophobic chain one or more hydrophilic chains terminating in a reactive group that covalently binds the molecule. Immobilized molecules are useful in diagnostic assays or bioreactors. A preferred heterofunctional crosslinking agent is succinyl-olivetoI-N hydroxysuceinimide having the structure: See Patent for Chemical Structure This agent is prepared by reacting succinic anhydride with 5pentyl resoreinol and condensing carboxylic acid groups with N-hydroxysuccinimide.
5279957 CDNA ENCODING HUMAN PHOSPHOLIPASE A2 POLYPEPTIDE Richar Gross assigned to Washington University The present invention provides a novel human polypeptide having phospholipase A2 activity, referred to as PLA2(Ca-). The invention also provides nucleic acid sequences coding for the novel polypeptide, expression vectors comprising the nucleic acid sequences coding for the novel polypeptide, host cells and cell cultures capable of expressing the novel polypeptide. The present invention further provides antisense oligonueleotides for modulation of expression of the gene coding for the novel polypeptide. Assays for screening test compounds for their ability to inhibit phospholipase A2 activity are also provided.

SYSTEM FOR THE DECONTAMINATION OF A CONTAMINATED GAS Michael M Hobby A decontamination system and method for the decontamination of a contaminated gas. The contaminated gas is characterized by a gas phase and at least one contaminant. The contaminated gas is removed from its source and is introduced into a loop through which a bio-agent is circulated. The bio-agent includes a microorganism (e.g. bacterium) effective for the biodegradation of the contaminant. The bio-agent may also inelude a liquid carrier. The loop may include absorption column, separator and bioreactor positioned in the loop. An oxidation means can be utilized to oxidize metals in the contaminated gas. Alternatively, the bio-agent can be replaced by a liquid which circulates through the bioreactor and which is effective for absorption of the contaminant. In other embodiments, the loop can be replaced by a conduit in a form or arrangement other than a loop.
5279964 STORABLE INOCULATION DEVICE CONTAINING STABILIZED MICROORGANISMS Gerald Chrisope assigned to Chrisope Technologies Inc The present invention is directed to an inoculation device including an easily manipulated handle together with microorganisms associated with a device for transferring and storing for extending periods stabilized, known microorganisms. This device is particularly useful in testing standard laboratory culture media. This device is easily produced by associating known microorganisms, either alone or together with a binding agent and other biologically acceptable additives and preservatives, with the sample transfer portion of the inoculation device. When substantially all of the water is removed from an inoculation device, including known microorganisms, the microbial containing device is storable for extended periods under sterile, dry conditions substantially free of water. The present method and apparatus conveniently and economically produces a disposable standard in-

5280112 DNA SEQUENCE ENCODING BOVINE AND HUMAN ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE RECEPTORS Roger D Cone, Kathleen G Mountjoy assigned to State of Oregon Oregon Health Sciences University The present invention relates to a mammalian adrenocorticotropic hormone receptor. The invention is directed toward the isolation, characterization and pharmacological use of mammalian adrenocorticotropic hormone receptor, the gene corresponding to this receptor, a recombinant eukaryotic expression construct capable of expressing a mammalian adrenocorticotropic hormone receptor in cultures of transformed eukaryotic cells and such cultures of transformed eukaryotic cells that synthesize mammalian adrenocorticotropic hormone receptor. The invention also provides methods for screening A C T H R agonists and antagonists in vitro using preparations of receptor from such cultures of eukaryotic cells transformed with a recombinant eukaryotic expression construct comprising the ACTHR receptor gene. The invention specifically provides human and bovine ACTHR genes.
5280113 METHOD FOR PRODUCING SYNTHETIC N-LINKED GLYCOCONJUGATES Thomas W Rademacher, lan D Manger, Simon Wong, Raymond A Dwek, Oxford, MO, United Kingdom assigned to Monsanto Company A method is disclosed for derivatizing oligosaccharides to form synthetic N-linked glycoconjugates by converting a glyeosylamine derivative of the oligosaccharide to a haloacetylated derivative as an intermediate compound prior to formation of the synthetic N-linked glycoconjugate to thereby directly maintain the betaanomeric configuration of said N-linked glycoconjugate.
5281417 ANTITUMOR PROCESS EMPLOYING NOVEL FERMENTATE OF AN ACTINOMADURA STRAIN Daniel R Schroeder, Kin S L a m , Jacqueline M Veitch assigned to Bristol-Myers Squibb Company A certain fermentation product of Actinomadura strain Q473-8 yields, when suitably treated, a novel compound having both antibiotic and antitumor activities.
5~14~ OSMOTIC CONCENTRATION APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR DIRECT OSMOTIC CONCENTRATION OF FRUIT JUICES John Herron, Edward G Beaudry, Carl Jochums, Luis Medina assigned to Osmotek Inc There is disclosed an osmotic concentration cell wherein the flow chamber of the osmotic concentration cell has a continually changing flow path to provide a region of high turbulence to a semipermeable membrane defining the flow chamber. High turbulence at a first semipermeable membrane interface significantly reduces membrane fouling during osmotic concentration and allows for concentration of products with high suspended solids content. The inventive osmotic concentration cell can be used for a variety of purposes including, for example, producing low alcohol wine, concentrating a thin wine into a premium wine, concentrating a low quality grape juice into a higher quality grape juice for fermenting a more premium wine, concentrating various fruit or vegetable juices, and concentrating various beverages, such as teas or coffee.
