signals of cancer cells and their colonies. In a second embodiment, the growth of cancer cells is determined by measunng the volume of colonies with the image signals of cancer cells and their colonies selectively extracted. The results can be obtained effectively within a short period of time.
5356814 DISAGGREGATION DEVICE FOR CYTOLOGICAL SPECIMENS Charles L Carrico, William Fox, James Geyer, Ernest A Knesel assigned to Hoffmann-La Roche Inc A device for disaggregating cytological material includes a cylindrical body and a plurality of shear plates at least one of which is located at the bottom end of the cylindrical body. The shear plates have a plurality of holes or slots formed therein which disaggregate the cellular sample and permit the passage of single cells and small cell clusters into a chamber defined by the cylindrical body.
5356815 APPARATUS FOR MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES IN LIQUID SUSPENSION BY LIGHT-SCATTERING TECHNIQUE Alfred Ciotti, Udine, Italy assigned to S I R E Sas di De Monte R An apparatus for microbiological analysis of biological samples in liquid suspension by lightecatterin8 technique, which employs testtube containers (11) made of a material transparent to electromagnetic radiations of a determined wave length. Each container (11) cooperating with a thermostat system (17) and at least momentarily with a stirring assembly (31) and relative keeper stirring means (18). The container (11) cooperating with a focussing and collimation system (22) and with a monitoring device (24), is illnminated by electromagnetic radiation of a determined wave length (74) emitted with its own axis (29) of emission and transmitted through the container (11) by the focussing and collimation system (22). The radiation is scattered by any microorganisms present in the sample with an intensity related to their number and morphology. This scattered radiation is picked-up in succession with desired timing by the monitoring device (24) according
to determined angles, from 0 degrees to 180 degrees, in relation to the emission axis (29). A computer collects the resulting data and constructs a curve representing intensity of scatt e M radiation versus time. The curve parameters are compared with reference values contained in a data bank of the computer (13) for determination of the typical parameters of the analysis i.e., the counting, the replication rate a n d the morphology o f microorganisms present in the sample.
5357001 OPTICALLY ACTIVE AMINO ACID SULPHOXIDE AND AMINO ACID SULPHONE DERIVATIVES, THEIR PREPARATION, THEIR POLYMERISATION AND USE AS ADSORBENTS FOR CHROMATOGRAPHIC RESOLUTION OF RACEMATES Michael Grosse-Bley, Bruno Bomer, Rolf Grosser, Walter Lange, Franz-Peter Huever, Dieter Arlt, Kfederal Republic Of Germana assigned to Bayer Aktiengesellschaft The invention relates to new optically active amino acid derivatives of the general formula (I) See Patent for Chemical Structure (I) in which n, R, RI, R2, 113, X and A have the meaning given in the description, which amino acid derivatives contain suiphoxide or sulphone groups, to two basic synthetic mutes for the preparation from sulphur-containing amino acids, to the polymerization of these monomers and to the use of the polymers as optically active adsorbents for chromatographic resolution of racemates to give the enantiomers.
5358614 METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR THE REMOVAL OF BIOCONVERSION OF CONSTITUENTS OF ORGANIC LIQUIDS Timothy Scott, Charles Scott assigned to Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inc A method and apparatus for the removal or conversion of constituents from bulk organic liquids. A countercurrent biphasic bioreactor system is utilized to disperse and reenal~:e a biocatalyst contained in the aqueous liquid phase into the organic liquid phase containing
