PATENT ABSTRACTS
from said male sterile plant and the other of said first and second recombinant molecules originating from said second plant, and said first and second gene products cooperating to selectively interfere with the function and/or development of cells of a plant that are critical to pollen formation and/or function of a plant grown from said seed whereby said plant grown from said seed is substantially male sterile. The invention also relates to a method of producing Fl hybrid seed from a plant regenerated from such seed, a method of producing F2 hybrid seed using plants regenerated from the F1 hybrid seed, the products produced from these methods and their use.

FUNGUS AND USES THEREOF
Blanchette Robert; Brush Theresa; Farrell Roberta L; Krisa Keith; Mishra ChiRr Shoreview, MN, UNITED STATES Assigned to Sandoz Ltd; The Regents of the Univ of Minnesota The white rot fungus Scytinostroma galactinum strain F361 and mutants thereof are particularly effective in selectively grading the lignin component of lignin-containing materials, particularly processed wood pulps including chemical pulps, and also particularly effective in degrading lignin degradation products such as chlorinated degraded lignin by-products as found, for example, in E-1 effluents, and also in degrading chlorine-containing aromatic compounds generally as found in aqueous waste streams containing the same.
SEED
Carlson William C; Hartle Jeffrey E; Bower Barbara K Olympia, WA, UNITED STATES Assigned to Weyerhaeuser Company An analog of botanic seed is disclosed which comprises a plant embryo preferably encapsulated, or at least in contact with, a hydrated oxygenated gel. The gel can be oxygenated by passing oxygen gas through a gel solution before curing the gel or by exposing the gel to oxygen gas after curing. The gel is preferably oxygenated by adding to an uncured gel solution a suitably stabilized emulsion of a perfluorocarbon compound or a silicone oil, which compounds are capable of absorbing large amounts of oxygen, and are non-toxic and inert. The seed analog can further comprise an outer shell at least partially surrounding the gel and embryo, thereby forming a capsule. The outer shell preferably is shaped to aid the radicle of a germinating embryo in protrusively rupturing the capsule, thereby facilitating successful germination and minimizing incidence of seedling malformation. Other shell materials are selected to provide requisite rigidity to the capsule while imparting minimal restriction to successful germination. In a preferred embodiment for germinating embryos having cotyledon(s), at least the cotyledons are enclosed in a porous material resistant to penetration by the growing cotyledon(s), and the embryo and porous enclosure are encapsulated in a hydrated gel.

VIRUS
Blair Debra; Duvick Jon; Townsend Rod Des Moines, IA, UNITED STATES Assigned to Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc In the present invention, methods and materials are provided to isolate the coat protein gene from Maize Dwarf Mosaic Virus-Strain A (MDMVA). This gene (MDMVA-CP) is then incorporated in an expression cassette designed for suitable expression in a plant cell system. The resulting transformation vector is then introduced into maize callus to provide cross-protection to MDMV or related viral infections.
